To demand better working conditions from the healthcare giant, Kaiser Permanente. This strike, which began this week, is an open-ended call for change, highlighting the critical issues of fair compensation and adequate staffing.
But here's where it gets controversial... This is not the first time these workers have taken such drastic action. In recent months, there have been two major walkouts by employees represented by the United Nurses Associations of California/Union of Health Care Professionals. The first strike, in October, ended with negotiations, but talks broke down in December, leading to this week's action.
The union accuses Kaiser of refusing to engage in national bargaining discussions, a move that has sparked frustration and a strong response. "We will continue to push Kaiser to do the right thing and come back to the table," the union bargaining committee stated, emphasizing their determination to fight for fair labor practices.
Kaiser, however, presents a different narrative. They claim the union agreed to return to local bargaining, even as the strike proceeded. The company cites a threatening incident involving a union official as the reason for pausing national talks, with Greg Holmes, Kaiser's chief human resources officer, stating, "Illegal threats are a line that cannot be crossed."
Those on strike, a diverse group including pharmacists, midwives, and rehab therapists, highlight the impact of stagnant wages and inadequate staffing on patient care. They demand a 25% wage increase over four years to bridge the gap with their peers, who they say are earning at least 7% more.
Kaiser's counteroffer of a 21.5% increase is seen as insufficient by the strikers. The company argues that its employees already earn 16% more on average than their peers and that meeting the strikers' demands would require raising customer charges.
Arezou Mansourian, a physician assistant on the bargaining team, sheds light on the impact of the strike, stating that Kaiser has struggled to retain and recruit providers, affecting patient care. Medical staff are leaving for higher-paying jobs at other local hospitals, she says, emphasizing the need for better working conditions to attract and retain talent.
The company assures that health clinics and hospitals will remain open during the strike, with some adjustments to appointments and elective procedures. Despite the disruption, Kaiser Permanente, one of the nation's largest not-for-profit health plans, serving 12.6 million members across the western U.S., maintains its commitment to patient care.
In a similar development, about 15,000 nurses in New York City recently returned to the bargaining table after a strike. The New York State Nurses Association resumed contract negotiations with officials at the impacted hospital systems: Montefiore, Mount Sinai, and New York-Presbyterian.
