Revolutionizing healthcare, scientists at the University of the West of England (UWE) are developing cutting-edge speech-to-text AI technology to streamline NHS appointments. This innovative system aims to enhance patient care by reducing doctors' administrative burden, allowing them to focus more on patients. The AI technology, developed by UWE, captures crucial details during consultations, creating notes and letters for clinicians to review. By doing so, it enables face-to-face interactions without the need for extended note-taking, as highlighted by Dr. John McCormick, chief clinical information officer at NHS England South West. This not only improves patient engagement but also reduces the stress associated with administrative tasks for doctors. The technology, tested with volunteer patients at UWE's mock GP surgery, has shown promising results, potentially saving up to three minutes per session. With the long-term goal of integrating the best models into the NHS, scientists are evaluating the AI's performance with different accents. While the technology is designed to adapt to various voices, doctors will still need to review and correct the final reports. The Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, the first trust in the UK to use AVT, has already seen positive outcomes, with patients and staff praising the improved focus and efficiency. As the technology expands, it is expected to create approximately 15,000 additional appointments annually, marking a significant step towards a more efficient and patient-centric healthcare system.
