Hold onto your facehuggers, folks, because Alien Earth Season 2 is on the horizon! The prequel series to the iconic Alien franchise wrapped its first season with a bang, leaving fans hungry for more. Let's dive into what we know about the next chapter of this thrilling series, from plot details to potential casting news.
First things first: Alien Earth is a priority for FX. The show's initial season was a critical and commercial success, consistently ranking among the top shows on both linear and streaming platforms. Given Alien's importance to Disney's IP portfolio, a second season was almost a given. John Landgraf, the chairman of FX, has made it clear that they want Noah Hawley, the showrunner, to prioritize Alien Earth, even before a potential sixth season of Fargo. This commitment speaks volumes about the studio's confidence in the series.
Season One certainly left the door wide open. The series introduced us to the Hybrids, humans integrated into cybernetic bodies, and the terrifying Xenomorphs, along with other dangerous extraterrestrial lifeforms. The first season saw Wendy and her Hybrid siblings rising up against Boy Kavalier and the Prodigy corporation. The season concluded with Weyland-Yutani forces heading toward Prodigy to reclaim alien specimens and potentially capture the Hybrids.
But here's where it gets controversial... Wendy has gained control over the Xenomorphs, a first for the franchise! However, how long can she maintain this control before their primal instincts take over? Furthermore, the ominous alien known as The Eye, now inhabiting Arthur's body, will serve as another formidable antagonist in season two.
Noah Hawley, the mastermind behind Fargo and Legion, is known for his unique storytelling and a measured approach to his projects. He has a clear vision for where Alien Earth is headed. In an interview, Hawley stated that he has a destination in mind, allowing him to know the story he's telling and its meaning. He's aiming to streamline the process so that fans don't have to wait years for the next installment.
As for the cast, expect to see familiar faces returning. Sydney Chandler is expected to reprise her role as Wendy, with Alex Lawther, Essie Davis, Babou Ceesay, and Samuel Blenkin likely to return as well. Timothy Olyphant is open to returning as Kirsh but would need a refresher on his robotic character. While some supporting characters may see their roles expanded, Hawley's tendency to introduce new characters and complexities suggests we could see significant changes to the ensemble.
And this is the part most people miss... Season 2 might begin to bridge the gap to the original 1979 Alien film. Set in 2120, the story is only two years away from the events of Ridley Scott's classic. Hawley intentionally kept the series separate, but the time may be right to connect the two. Hawley mentioned that they need to think about how these two stories will cohere in the long term.
So, when can we expect to see season two? With the first season's finale airing in September 2025, and no official greenlight yet, it might be a while. Production was also affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2023 strikes, which halted production on the first episode. Given the post-production demands of the series, a 2027 release seems like the earliest possible date if writing and production ramp up by mid-2026.
