A frantic effort is ongoing to locate Ash Haigh, a 44-year-old game fisherman from the Gold Coast who has gone missing. In a race against time, numerous volunteers, alongside various authorities, are thoroughly searching the waters that extend beyond state borders, driven by the hope of finding him alive.
Ash was last observed shortly after 6:30 AM on Thursday morning when his solitary boat was seen navigating past the seaway and heading out toward the depths of the ocean. Eyewitnesses spotted the vessel again off Main Beach, moving to the right, just moments before Ash vanished.

Despite more than 48 hours passing since his disappearance, there has been no sign of Haigh. His boat, named the Grey Ghost, was discovered unoccupied east of Burley, prompting an extensive search operation that is now underway.
Andrew Dunbar, a fellow member of the Gold Coast Game Fishing Club, expressed his distress, stating, "He’s a very good friend. We want him back. Just come home safe." This heartfelt plea highlights the emotional strain being felt by those who know him.
At the time he went missing, Ash was engaged in one of his favorite activities—trolling for marlin in the abundant waters off the Gold Coast. Stuart Grice, a close friend, painted a picture of Ash as a dedicated family man who not only cherished fishing but also enjoyed sharing stories and giving back to his community.
The camaraderie of the close-knit game-fishing community has shone through in these challenging times, as they unite in their efforts to locate him. Search operations have expanded to cover wider areas of the Gold Coast waters and have crossed into New South Wales, reaching locations such as Ballina, Evans Head, and Yamba.
A Challenger plane has been dispatched to survey the ocean, extending its search as far south as Evans Head and heading north towards Tweed. "It’s massive if he does get found," Grice remarked, illustrating the vastness of the search area and the hope that still remains.
In spite of the adverse conditions faced by search teams, there is a sense of optimism among them. Notably, one life jacket that was aboard Haigh’s boat has not yet been accounted for, sparking a glimmer of hope that perhaps he managed to stay afloat somehow. As Dunbar optimistically noted, "Hopefully signs that Ash is floating along somewhere, kicking back, and hopefully he’s OK."
Authorities are calling on anyone who might be out on the water to keep an eye out for debris or any other signs that could lead to the missing fisherman.
