DAYTONA BEACH — A cast member of a docudrama TV series claims that after being hospitalized at Halifax Health Medical Center for injuries from a motorcycle accident during Bike Week, he was subsequently discharged because he lacked insurance.

But Halifax Health officials, who could not speak to the specific case because of patient confidentiality laws, said a patient’s ability to pay is never a factor in the health care services they provide or discharge decisions. The 558-bed facility is the only public hospital in the area.

Josh Owens, who stars in the Discovery channel show “Moonshiners,” said his care at the Daytona Beach hospital was stellar until a female employee inquired about how he intended to pay and that “his insurance had run out.”

Owens, 40, of Asheville, North Carolina, said he was surprised by the statement since he has not had any insurance coverage since he was 21. Less than a day after the encounter, Owens said he was discharged from the hospital.

He added that he didn’t expect a handout from the hospital just because he lacked traditional health coverage. “Send me a bill and I would pay what I can,” Owens said.

“I was too screwed up to ask a whole lot of questions. I was in the hospital for a few days before they said anything about insurance.”

Owens was taken to Halifax Health by ambulance on March 16 after he was thrown from an antique motorcycle while preparing for an exhibition race at the New Smyrna Speedway. He was expected to participate the next day in Billy Lane’s Sons of Speed Vintage Motorcycle Race.

Owens said the accident broke all but one of his ribs, punctured a lung, broke his collarbone and shoulder blade and stripped the skin off one of his pointer fingers down to the bone. He said he initially spent five days at the hospital.

In response to an inquiry from The News-Journal, hospital officials said they could not accurately say how long a patient might stay in the hospital for broken ribs. The length of stay, officials said, would depend on other injuries, age and various other factors.

Taking all these factors into consideration, a patient’s hospital stay could be for one day or as long as 10 days, said Ann Martorano, a Halifax Health spokeswoman.

“People break their ribs all the time. Some of them are never admitted to the hospital; it’s just a matter of taping them up,” Martorano said. “It’s all based on the total picture of the patient.”

6:29 AM PT -- Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... Lance's mom, Lynn, called 911 and told the dispatcher she found him unconscious and not breathing at 9:45 PM on February 25. We're told Graham County Sheriff's deputies responded to the Robbinsville home and found Lance dead ... lying on top of his bed.

Our sources say Lance's mom had last spoken to Lance four hours earlier. At some point after that conversation, we’re told Lance went into his bedroom and laid down on his bed. We're told there are no signs of foul play and his cause of death is being investigated by the medical examiner.

Lance Waldroup, a famous bootlegger from Discovery's "Moonshiners," has died.

Lance died Feb. 25 in his home state of North Carolina ... according to his father, Jeff, who also appeared on the reality show alongside his son. The cause of death remains unclear.

Discovery tells TMZ ... Lance will be remembered as an adventurous distiller who was always looking to take his flavorful recipes of moonshine to new heights.

Lance appeared in several early seasons of the show ... bootlegging out of North Carolina with his father. He was one of the younger and less experienced moonshiners, and would often turn to his dad for guidance. He also distilled absinthe and scotch.

Lance's family set up a GoFundMe to raise money for a memorial fund, and the description says he was a recovering drug addict who had turned his life around after going to rehab.

The Waldroups have really been through it -- the family says Lance had survivor's guilt because his sister died when she was 11, and his brother died when he was 20.

Lance was only 30.

In 2015 he considered running against U.S Representative Robert Hurt in south Virginia, wanting to be amongst the law makers, but this was somehow a long shot and out of reach for him, some kind of wild dream, which never came to pass, partly because of his run-in with the law.

According to TMZ, Waldroup's family set up a GoFundMe for a memorial fund and added that the reality star was a "recovering drug addict" who turned things around after a stay in rehab. He was preceded in death by his sister at age 11 and his brother's death at age 20. TMZ notes that the family shared Waldroup dealt with "survivor's guilt" during his short life.

"We are looking to help raise as much money as possible in the next few weeks to be able to present to the family for a proper burial. Tickle, was thrown into the limelight by ‘Moonshiners in 2013, an American docudrama TV show featured on the Discovery Channel. The success of this show and his success too, brought on board the sequel, ‘Tickle’ also featured on Discovery Channel. Funnily enough, this was not Tickle’s first career, or choice. Besides this, Steven Tickle is a classified carpenter, recognized for building the popular Clyde’s Restaurant located in the Washington Metropolitan Area. Carpentry is a skill he enjoyed and traded in long before his TV career began.

    Steven Ray Tickle’s Political Ambitions

Buoyed by the success and fame he has gathered through the TV Series, Tickle at one point nursed political ambitions, with his eyes set for the US Congress. In 2015 he considered running against U.S Representative Robert Hurt in south Virginia, wanting to be amongst the law makers, but this was somehow a long shot and out of reach for him, some kind of wild dream, which never came to pass, partly because of his run-in with the law.

Tickle’s Run-in with the Law; Dead?

Steven Ray Tickle hasn’t always had smooth sailing, especially in the public eye, having been arrested in 2013 for drunkenness, so he has enjoyed media attention for all the wrong reasons; according to a complaint filed by a citizen, Tickle apparently drank from an open container at a parking lot. In 2015 he was arrested again, and charged with illegal possession of a firearm; his three year jail term was suspended, but he was later thrown into prison for five months having violated his probation. At one point, it was even rumored that Steven Ray Tickle was dead after an accident, but clarified later that the rumor might have generated from some his actions.

How much could Steven Ray Tickle be worth Today?

From his debut in the 3rd season of “Moonshiners” alone, Tickle is believed to have earned over

million. From the Show “Tickle” it is estimated that Tickle earned an annual salary of 5,000. These significant earnings, however, are not the only sources of his net worth. Tickle is also an accomplished carpenter who built one of the popular food joints in Verizon Center in downtown Washington called ‘Clyde’s’ Restaurant. So, authoritative sources estimate that his net worth is over 0,000 as of late 2018.

Steven Ray Tickle, Family Life, Married, Wife

Over and above his fame and net worth, Steven’s family life has been shrouded in mystery. The little that is in the public domain, however, indicates that Tickle was born to his mother Louise Eileen Tickle, and now lives in rural Pittsylvania County, Virginia, while working in Gretna. Little is revealed about his father, but it’s claimed that Tickle’s seeking refuge in drugs was as a result of his father’s illness, which took a toll on him as a young person. However, Tickle pulled himself together, and quit the habits that would have ruined him, and indulged in his career doing what he loves most. On being hitched, Tickle has kept his mouth shut, even though fans would love to hear that Steven has got someone close to his heart to share his life with, but seems to enjoy his single life at the moment. However, Tickle does have a doting daughter named Daisy Tickle, currently 17 years of age.

Steven Ray Tickle’s personal life has largely remained a mystery, and the fact that he is tight lipped about it makes it even harder for his fans and followers to keep tabs on the goings on around him. Very little is known about his father, or wife and love life if any, or if he is in a relationship or intends to get hitched.

‘Moonshiners’ is an American documentary-style reality television drama, created by Magilla Entertainment, a leading reality television production company known for many popular shows, which includes ‘Southie Rules’ and ‘Dead North’.

Filmed in the Appalachian Mountain area of Kentucky, North and South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia, ‘Moonshiners’ follows the daily lives of locals who, apparently illegally, produce and distribute moonshine, a strong alcoholic beverage popular among the Appalachian region of the US.

The series documents, and at times dramatises the numerous stars’ efforts of producing the beverage, following them as they overcome daily difficulties, having to evade local law enforcement while distributing their produce. ‘Moonshiners’ debuted on Discovery Channel in December 2011, and due to high demand and a popular reception, the show premiered its tenth season in November 2020.

With an estimated three million viewers watching every season, some might easily consider it one of the most popular shows featured on Discovery Channel. As such, the show naturally inspired the creation of several spin-offs, and today it boasts nearly more additional series than the ‘Real Housewives’ franchise.

Despite the show’s widely achieved popularity and its depiction of unquestionably felonious activity, none of the producers, cast members, or anyone involved in its creation have had bad run-ins with the law, yet, Magilla Entertainment holds fast that the show’s content is authentic, so to no surprise, the lack of police involvement caused the rise of scepticism among not only fans and viewers of ‘Moonshiners’, but also local officials.

At one point, Virginian state officials issued a demand to Magilla Entertainment, attempting to force them to publicise a disclaimer stating that the show is a fictitious recreation.

However, Magilla Entertainment of course overlooked the suggestion, insisting that ‘Moonshiners’ is nothing but an honest representation of the moonshining business.

After nearly ten years on the air, ‘Moonshiners’ has featured more stars than can be counted on one’s fingers, sadly many of them eventually leaving the show. Surprisingly, none of them ended up behind bars, at least not for reasons related to moonshining, nor for their involvement in the show.

As with many reality television stars, their fame afforded them a mass following of fans, many of whom might wonder what happened to their favourite stars since their departure from ‘Moonshiners’. Some of them may have been lucky enough to land their own dedicated shows, but others seem to have moved on to other things in life.

Unfortunately, some of the stars featured on ‘Moonshiners’ have met with misfortune and tragically lost their lives.

One such star, Marvin ‘Popcorn’ Sutton, who inspired the creation of the series, passed away before the first season premiered on Discovery Channel. Here’s a look into the lives of some of the shiners after the series ended.

    Tickle

One of the all-time favourites, Steven Ray Tickle, known simply as ‘Tickle’, left the show in 2017 following the end of the seventh season. Steven joined the cast as an original feature, appearing in the first season and remaining in the cast until his departure six years later.

While appearing on ‘Moonshiners’, Steven lived and worked in a rural county of Virginia – Pittsylvania – in the small town of Gretna where, in the isolated backwoods, he produced his illegal moonshine.

Steven became a near-instant hit with viewers, and as a direct result, he earned his own show in 2013, after discovering an abandoned stash of moonshine in the same wooded area where he operated.

The show, entitled ‘Tickle’, followed Steven’s endeavours as he attempted to sell the chance find, all without gaining the attention of both the stash’s owner and law enforcement.

‘Tickle’ ran for a single season, but undoubtedly did Steven’s fame a big favour, affording him a greater following than most of the other shiners featured in the series. As such, many viewers were disappointed by the news of Steven’s departure from the show. Many of them now wonder where the reality star might be, and of course what he’s up to these days. However, there are many secrets about Tickle that even his most dedicated fans might not know.

Before becoming a moonshine distiller in Virginia, the reality star worked as a carpenter in Washington DC, and according to certain sources, excelled at his job. Among the projects he worked on, Steven participated in the construction of Clyde’s Restaurant near the Verizon Centre in Washington DC.

What exactly convinced him to move to Virginia and begin distilling moonshine remains a mystery, but ever since, Steven has fallen out of favour with the local law. It’s no secret that Tickle spent some time behind bars. However, as mentioned, none of the cases against him include any moonshine-related incidents. In 2013, Virginia police arrested Tickle on charges of public intoxication, and in 2015, police once again placed him in custody, this time for the possession of a sawn-off shotgun.

The following year, Steven was once again arrested after violating the terms of his probation, and during the most recent incident, police arrested Tickle for driving while his license was suspended. However, the chances of catching Steven Ray distilling and distributing illegal moonshine nowadays have become impossible.

After several years of working in the shadows, Steven applied for his legal permit to distil, and left the show to pursue legal business ventures regarding the sale of moonshine.

Since then, Steven has also married. He tied the knot with Carol Anne in 2019, holding a moonshine-themed ceremony. Despite no longer appearing on the show, Steven still keeps up with his fans and followers through social media. He often shares updates about his legal moonshining, and keeps showing support for his friends who remained in the show.

    Jeff

Jeff Waldroup joined the cast of ‘Moonshiners’ at the beginning of the second season, alongside his son Lance, and business partner Mark. As a seventh-generation moonshiner, Jeff built a reputation in North Carolina highlands as the best distiller in the region, but as seen on the show, his operation came under threat from new arrivals.

While appearing on ‘Moonshiners’, Jeff aimed to double his operations output, and hope to increase their annual revenue in an effort to restore his now tarnished reputation. Jeff and his troupe remained a part of the cast for several seasons.

Then in 2017, towards the end of the seventh season, Jeff and Lance began appearing less and less on the show, though the reasons for their absence were never made public. While Mark took over the operation of Jeff’s distillery, many fans speculated that both Lance and Jeff might be serving time, yet their speculations never received any confirmation.

Other rumors suggested that the Waldroup family experienced financial difficulties, which gained some confirmation after Lance and Jeff started advertising things for sale on the internet. In 2021, after the father and son duo once again became absent from the show, fans expressed their concern, this time seemingly well placed.

Sadly, on 25 February earlier this year (2021), Lance Waldroup passed away. According to most reports, Lance’s mother, Lynn Waldroup, discovered him unconscious on his bed at 9:45 PM. The last time she spoke with him was only hours before the discovery, and upon finding Lance unresponsive, Lynn immediately called for medical response.

The local Graham County Sheriffs responded to the emergency call, but upon their arrival, they unfortunately found Lance dead. Sadly, it was not the only loss the Waldroup family experienced – Lance’s siblings passed away years before. His brother passed away at the age of 20, and his sister when she was only 11. Lance was 30 years old when he passed away.

As of yet, officials still haven’t announced Lance’s cause of death, but it seems that Jeff might not return for the latest season of ‘Moonshiners’. Since the news reached fans, they took to social media to express their condolences, and some supported the family on GoFundMe to lend support for Lance’s memorial service.

    Jim The Legend

Jim Tom Hedrick joined the cast of ‘Moonshiners’ for the second season, making appearances until the end of the sixth season. According to most sources, Jim, who is currently in his eighties, left the show because he retired from the distilling industry.

Over the years, Jim became one of the greatest distillers in the Appalachian region, building a reputation for himself as a legendary stiller and story-teller. According to other stars featured on the show, namely Mark and Digger, the legend of Jim Tom, who used to partner with the late Sutton, inspired their outlaw adventures in the shining business.

However, despite his retirement, many of Jim’s products and recipes are still for sale. He now sells it legally with the help of a company known as Sugarlands Distillery, of which he is part owner, along with Digger and Mark.

Today, Jim shares his knowledge and experience from all the many years of working in the industry with the newcomers and novices hoping to follow in his footsteps. In fact, the last time viewers saw Jim in action was when he partnered with rookie Josh. Other than that, news of his current whereabouts remains a mystery. Despite his fame from ‘Moonshiners’, it seems Jim prefers to keep to himself, enjoying the comforts of a quiet life.

    Bill and Josh

Bill Elliot became an addition to the cast of ‘Moonshiners’ at the beginning of the second season. Along with his partner Josh, Bill became a fan favourite, unfortunately, mostly because of the constant disputing and arguing among themselves.

However, when they’re not arguing, the two could produce some of the best moonshine in the Appalachian region, all thanks to their impressive construction skills that allows them to build distilleries of greater quality than many professional set-ups.

Unfortunately, the constant bickering between Josh and Bill eventually took its toll on their partnership, and in 2016 during the filming of the sixth season, they parted ways. This ultimately cost them their places in the show, despite Josh’s efforts to remain in the business.

Bill has been a part of the moonshining industry for more than a decade, beginning his endeavours after his mentor, Barney Barnwell, taught him everything he knows.

Unfortunately, no news about Bill circulates the internet since his departure from the show, but with so much experience in distilling, one can expect that he will continue to produce moonshine for a long time to come.

As for Josh, following his departure, rumours about his death began appearing online in February 2019, but these haven’t been confirmed. According to online speculation, Josh Owens passed away from injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident. After being rushed to the Daytona Beach Hospital with severe injuries which included several broken ribs, a pierced lung, and several other broken bones, the Hospital allegedly refused to treat Owens because he couldn’t afford the medical care.

Fortunately, other sources claim that Owens survived the motorcycle accident, but he did accuse the hospital of prematurely discharging him. Despite his allegations, Josh still had to pay the bills.

    Chico and Sondra

In season three, the cast of ‘Moonshiners’ added a dynamic couple to their list of top-class distillers.

Best known as Chico and Sondra, Matthew Louis Tungate and Cossondra Thompson quickly became fan favourites, because of their exciting passion for brewing the best moonshine in Kentucky.

Recognised as both a distiller and an opportunistic distributor, Chico always eagerly puts everything on the line to succeed in the competitive business. While this makes him a fearless competitor and a fierce rival for the other distillers, his all-out determination often cost him and Sondra more than they could afford to lose.

Despite Chico’s almost reckless approach to the business, they remained tough competitors in the Kentucky region for many years. However, after completing the sixth season, the couple unexpectedly parted from the show, without warning or giving their fans an explanation.

According to the theories of fans posted on the internet, many believe that the couple decided to turn their back on the illegal brewing after the birth of their firstborn child. As admirable a choice as it is, many fans were disappointed when news of their departure spread.

discovery channel moonshiners tickle dies (52)

Of course, moonshining was not the couple’s only form of income, even if it might have been the most profitable.

When Chico’s not distilling moonshine, he breeds and races Kentucky trotter horses. Unfortunately, the Tungate family has kept a low profile ever since their departure from ‘Moonshiners’. As such, little to no news about their current well-being reaches the internet and the public.

Despite the departure of the show’s many colourful and beloved members, ‘Moonshiners’ continues to entertain its extensive audience. As always, it remains popular, and all the new faces find ways to entertain the dedicated fans, and even draw in new viewers.

If you are one of the many who simply can’t get enough of the Appalachian moonshiners, then Discovery Channel premiered the perfect show for you in March of 2020. Feel free to check out the latest addition to the spin-offs ‘Moonshiners: Master Distiller’, which promises to be as entertaining as the original.

Discovery Channel always looks to bring new shows to their public, and has reached into the moonshining community, wanting to showcase the whole process of making this somewhat illegal liquor. “Moonshiners” is the series about people who are making the highly-praised alcohol, and they have become stars over the years. Jim Tom is one of them, being in the business for more than 60 years.

So, do you want to find out more about Jim Tom, from how he got into the moonshining business to his recent career endeavors, and his personal life as well? If yes, then stay with us for a while, as we bring you closer to this prominent TV star and moonshiner.

Jim Tom Wiki: Age and Early Life

Born Jim Marvin Hedrick on the 25th December 1940, in Robbinsville, North Caroline USA, details about his early life remain unknown, since he has quite successfully hidden all the most important details, including the names of his parents and whether he has any siblings. He started working at an early age, and held several jobs before he ventured into moonshining.

At only 15 he started his moonshining career serving as a sugar supplier, and would haul sugar by boat to a national park, where his employer had a distillery. However, this didn’t last long as he would soon discover that he could start moonshining on his own. During this time he was working in several other positions since moonshining is illegal, and he needed something that would bring money. As a result, he was a plumber, electrician, ham radio operator, and vehicle maintenance guy; furthermore, he explored his singing talents, releasing a couple of country songs, including “Golly That’s Good”, which actually became a hit.

    Rise to Prominence

He never stopped moonshining, and the hard work eventually paid off. He became a part of the new Discovery Channel series “Moonshiners”, alongside other moonshiners Josh Owens, Tim Smith and Mark Rogers, among others. Thanks to the show, Jim became a prominent reality TV personality, and his product was seen by many across the US and other countries as well. This resulted in corporate success, since Jim started selling his own moonshine, ‘100 Proof Unaged Rye’, through an endorsem*nt deal with the SugarlandDistilling Company. Until 2016 Jim was a regular on the show, however, after that he appeared sporadically, making only a few appearances. Because of this, many thought that Jim was having some serious health issues, even that he might be dead, as a long time followed his last appearance in the show without news.

Is Jim Tom Dead? Health Issues

Jim is now nearing his 90th birthday, so it’s normal that he began to experience health decline, however, he has actually just become a little slower, and nothing else is wrong with him, so he’s certainly not dead. On the other hand, he experienced a horrifying accident back in 1962, when he was only 22 years old. It was the Halloween night and Jim andhis girlfriend’s sister’s husband raced on the road, with Jim riding the 1961 Starliner 390. At a curve, Jim riding over 115mph hit a1955 Ford Station Wagon, which was heading towards him. The collision was heavy, and Jim was left with a head injury and broken leg, but doctors managed to save him, and he left the hospital with several stitches in his head, and a steel rod in his leg.

    Jim Tom Net Worth

Since launching his career when he was 15, Jim has held numerous jobs, all of which helped him to increase his net worth, although it wasn’t until 2012 that he became known to the world. After he was chosen for the cast of the reality TV series “Moonshiners”, Jim’s net worth started to increase rapidly. So, have you ever wondered how rich Jim Tom is, as of early 2019? According to authoritative sources, it has been estimated that Jim Tom’s net worth is as high as 0,000. Pretty impressive, don’t you think?

What do you know about Jim Tom in his personal life? Well, he is a storyteller, we give him credit for that, however, the most important stories from his life remain untold, including if he is married, and does he have children? What we do know is that Jim has often been in trouble with law enforcement officers, ironically mostly for being drunk on his own product, but never for moonshining. Whenever they tried to find something illegal in his production, there was nothing, and anytime Jim was arrested for being drunk, or for disorderly conduct, he would soon be released from jail.

    05-03-2021

Lance Waldroup, one of the bootleggers featured in Discovery’s reality series “Moonshiners,” died on Feb. 25 in North Carolina. He was 30.

The network confirmed Waldroup’s death in a Facebook post earlier this week.

“We are saddened to hear about the loss of Lance Waldroup,” the network said. “An adventurous distiller who was featured alongside his father throughout the early seasons of Moonshiners, Lance was always looking to take his flavorful recipes of ‘shine to new heights.”

A cause of death has not yet been revealed. However, a GoFundMe page set up by his family to raise money for a memorial fund says the death was “unexpected.”

Waldroup, one of the less experienced bootleggers on the series, frequently appeared on “Moonshiners” with his father, Jeff, to whom he would frequently turn for guidance.

According to the GoFundMe, Waldroup is a native of Graham County, N.C. His sister, Lyndsey, had cystic fibrosis and died at the age of 11, and his brother, Lamar, also had cystic fibrosis and died at the age of 20, 1.5 years after a lung transplant, leaving Lance with no siblings. The losses left him with survivor’s guilt, according to the page, and he “was an addict for several years and then decided to turn his life around. He went to rehab and had become a recovered addict.”

Waldroup quit “Moonshiners” to take care of his mother, Lynn, after she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. “He did not want to leave her side and waited on her hand and foot,” the GoFundMe page reads.

A memorial service for Waldroup is set for March 6 at the Cedar Cliff Baptist Church in Robbinsville, N.C.

The Untold Truth Of The Moonshiners

discovery channel moonshiners tickle dies (55)

02-03-2016 · Moonshiners' segments featuring Marvin "Popcorn" Sutton weren't filmed by the Discovery Channel. They come from a documentary. Filmed by Neal Hutcheson in 2002, the original project spotlighting ...

    02-03-2016

The Moonshiners, you love them, you know them. Or do you? Seeing as how their livelihoods come from an illegal activity, it stands to reason the cast's lives are shrouded in secrecy, until now. We're going beyond the cameras and empty bottles of hooch to expose the barreled secrets of the Moonshiners.

For all the hubbub surrounding their profession, the Moonshiners aren't outlaws. The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, which regularly participates in the show, said so to Fox News in 2011. Virginia ABC spokeswoman Kathleen Shaw stated in a released email, "If illegal activity was actually taking place, the Virginia ABC Bureau of Law Enforcement would have taken action." Looks like the only thing the Moonshiners are guilty of is putting one over on the public.

The main reason Tickle and the boys haven't been shut down is that they don't actually make liquor, while filming anyway. Though they take the camera through the steps of moonshine manufacturing and act like the cops are on their tails, they don't make any booze in front of the cameras. The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control also stated that what the show depicts is a dramatization. However, they weren't always wise to that fact. The Virginia ABC went on to tell the Associated Press that it "did not participate nor was aware of the false depiction of moonshine manufacturing. They wouldn't have investigated the gang if they knew it was all bogus from the start. Government employees don't like being fooled.

The Discovery Channel's producers are in on this hoodwinking of the public. In addition to calling foul on this backwoods bamboozlement, the Virginia ABC asked that a disclaimer be added to the show. According to Fox News, this request "was overlooked," which is probably a code word for ignored. This shouldn't be a surprise, because this is the same channel whose recent dramatizations try to convince viewers that mermaids are real and that megalodons stalk the seas.

Moonshiners' segments featuring Marvin "Popcorn" Sutton weren't filmed by the Discovery Channel. They come from a documentary. Filmed by Neal Hutcheson in 2002, the original project spotlighting the covert bootlegger is titled This is the Last Dam Run of Likker I'll Ever Make. In 2008, PBS edited the documentary into a special titled The Last One, which actually won a Southeast Emmy Award. Hopefully Hutcheson got some nice residuals out the Discover Channel using his footage. Sutton most definitely didn't because...

Between the filming of This is the Last Dam Run of Likker I'll Ever Make and the premiere of Bootleggers, many things happened. In particular, Popcorn Sutton was arrested by the ATF in January 2009. Sutton was sentenced to 18 months in jail, according to the BlueRidgeNow. Because of his age and a recent cancer diagnosis, the judge let Sutton carry out his sentence via house arrest. Sutton later took his own life. Sounds like the Discovery Channel has no qualms about making money off the dead.

Even though he doesn't make moonshine on camera, Tim Smith does know how to make it. He learned the hillbilly hooch trade as a little tyke from his father. That's when he had his first run-in with the law. Smith told Fox News in 2012, "I was about five-years-old when my dad first got raided," and went on to describe his efforts to hide the illicit alcohol from law enforcement. Ever since, Smith has been sticking it to the man with his own brand of redneck justice, or so it may seem...

In 2013, hayseed hero Tim Smith went legit. According to The Bulletin, he launched his own brand of legal moonshine, which can be bought in stores. Named Tim Smith's Climax Whiskey: The Drink of Defiance, each bottle is anything but. A traditionally outlaw drink ceases being rebellious when taxes are paid on it and its production follows government regulations. It's even less unruly when hats, shirts, and other swag are sold along with it, which Smith does. The label of Smith's hooch also bears the visage of his dog Camo, possibly the only honest face in this whole moonshine venture.

Not making enough money off of his moonshine sales, Steven Ray Tickle is eyeing some of that sweet, sweet taxpayer money. In 2013, Tickle announced he was "considering a bid for Congress in southern Virginia," according to the Washington Examiner. His stated intention is to use some of his notoriety to make a positive change. You can probably find a list of his policies stuck on the bottom of a mason jar somewhere.

When Steven Ray Tickle announced his congressional interests, it was also revealed that he works as a carpenter. By all indications, he's a pretty good one too. The Washington Examiner refers to him as a top carpenter while he was building a "Clyde's restaurant near the Verizon Center," in Washington, D.C. He's also a member of a union, so at least one of his sources of income is on the up and up, theoretically. At least he can win over voters with his blue-collar background. He's good at crafting buildings like the Discovery Channel's good at crafting the Moonshiners as actual outlaws.

Of course, it really shouldn't be that surprising to learn that Tickle, or any of the other Moonshiners really, has an arrest record—it'd be even more surprising if his record was clean. True to character, Tickle was arrested for public intoxication in 2013. TMZ reports that Tickle was found drinking alone in his car at a convenience store parking lot. (It probably means he wasn't drinking his own rotgut, but something name-brand. Whatever happened to company loyalty?) He was released later that day. A drunk-in-public charge probably won't hurt Tickle's governmental cravings. If anything, it'll help them, just like his other arrest.

In January 2016, Steven Ray Tickle was convicted of illegal firearm possession, according to GoDanRiver. In July 2015, Tickle was allegedly spotted with a sawed-off shotgun during a routine traffic stop. Though he had not used it for anything, being found with such a weapon is a crime in Virginia. When Tickle was pulled over, he was already in his own driveway, which is technically his property. Logistics of the law and case aside, this is definitely in Tickle's favor. He'll easily win over the NRA and other Second Amendment rights proponents. Moonshiners' illegal activities might be fabricated but Steven Ray Tickle is no stranger to Mr. John Q. Law.

Don’t be fooled by the proud rednecks on Moonshiners! The bootleggers are making way more money than you think. The cast of the Discovery Channel reality show live in the backwoods stretching from North Carolina to Virginia to Tennessee — and most of them are raking in the money thanks to their “illegally produced” shine.

Fans are wondering about the cast’s net worth — and with a little bit of research, it’s easy to see that making moonshine just might be worth the risk. For a lot of the guys on the show, making the alcohol is more than just a business, it’s a tradition passed on by generations of their family members. Tim Smith, who went legal with his signature Climax Whiskey, hopes to still pass along the moonshine skill to his son.

“Everybody knows somebody who makes it, or drinks it or knows how to get it, he said of the trade in 2015. “[The show] just brought it to national attention, so it’s growing every day.” Their income plus the ,000 they are reportedly paid per episode is guaranteed to ensure that they won’t be going out of business anytime soon. So how much are the guys (and gals) on Moonshiners really worth? Keep reading below to find out!

Josh, better known as Cutie Pie’s dad on the reality show, may lose his trailer to a fire this season, but we have a feeling he will be alright. The moonshiner is worth an estimated 0,00 and is reported to make six figures a year on his alcohol.

Fans of Discovery Moonshiners have been asking about a couple that made a splash the last season, Sondra (Cossondra Thompson) and Chico, her man.

Based on the photos the couple are sharing on Facebook, it looks like they got married (or are engaged) and have had a baby too!

The official word from Discovery PR is that: “Chico and Sondra will not be appearing on this season of Moonshiners.”

Sondra – which is short for Cossondra – has shared a lot about her life on her Facebook page, where she posted a picture of the two showing off an engagement ring.

She also has a Moonshiner Sondra Facebook page, where she announced the birth of their son Wyatt.

This is very happy news for fans of the couple who made quite an impression on the series about people who still make illegal moonshine in Kentucky.

Chico summarized himself on his Facebook page saying:

This Kentucky redneck is dead set on making his way to the top with his sharp wit and need to bring humor to a hard life moonshiner and comedian.”

it looks like Chico and Sondra gave up the TV series and now have a successful distillery business and brand of whiskey they are selling.

Olde Towne Moonshiner Chico Spirit Whiskey is described as:

Olde Towne Moonshiner Chico Spirit Whiskey

Moonshiner Chico is from the TV show Moonshiners and he has partnered up with Olde Towne Distillery to produce a blend of our good Bourbon and White Liquor to make Spirit Whiskey. The whiskey is 20 percent Bourbon and 80 percent White whiskey straight out of the still, then the Blended Whiskey is aged in charred oak barrel staves to give it a unique flavor.

It is a smooth drinking whiskey with an aged flavor of the oak staves much like the old whiskey of the past.

This season on Moonshiners, the surviving moonshiners must work together to survive, as they are known as “outlaws” for generations now.

There is unprecedented demand for their spirits and increased law enforcement is giving them all a wakeup call.

It is harder than ever for these masters of distilling to make their craft spirits and they are in threat of losing their culture too.

Big corporations are trying to take over the market for “craft spirits” with cheap factory-made liquor, while the moonshiners still use traditional recipes and techniques of artisanal heritage whiskey alive in the remote corners of Appalachia.

Moonshiners airs Wednesday nights at 9PM on Discovery.

    08-05-2020

I meet Eric Manes inside Fruit Jar Alley, his wife’s clothing boutique in the sleepy Smoky Mountain town of Newport, Tennessee. Better known as “Digger” from the Discovery Channel docu-series Moonshiners, Manes is wearing overalls with the top button on each side undone, and doesn’t look like someone of reality TV fame. But then again, Manes doesn’t exactly line up with my expectation of a real-life, backwoods moonshiner either—someone who has spent his life illegally making the kind of liquor that’s bottled up in unlabeled mason jars. He’s polite and fairly clean cut, with a short, gray beard and glasses, and a thick Southern accent. At 56 years old, he reminds me a bit of my dad.

Manes walks me through his store next door, The Back Alley Grainery, where he, ironically, sells brewing and winemaking supplies. Upstairs is a lounge that he calls his Dude Den. The space is bigger than my apartment and mostly empty except for a bar, a pool table, and a small seating area. The minimal decorations include a taxidermy white bird and a picture of a donkey. Manes props one of those unlabeled jars of brown liquor on the bar and offers me a sip. For himself, he cracks open a can of Mountain Dew.

I oblige and, to my surprise, it’s actually pretty good. “I don’t make sh*tty liquor,” Manes says.

    Becoming an “outlaw”

Manes has been making moonshine in the Smoky Mountains for more than 40 years. A friend’s father was a still builder, and when Manes was just 14 years old, he approached the man, eager to learn the trade. “He said that when I turned 18 and my father said it was okay, he’d let me hang around with him, but not before then,” says Manes. “Making liquor might have been a bit of a tax violation, but folks around here, they had morals. They were good family men that just needed to make a living, and they wouldn’t let a child hang around that.”

On his 18th birthday, with his father’s permission—“he didn’t think I’d stick with it,” Manes recalls—he returned to the still builder, ready to learn. A licensed embalmer, Manes worked at his father’s funeral parlor by day and moonshined by night.

“It was not the money that really lured me in. I always looked up to these old guys that made liquor around here. They were always kind to folks and they were the pillars of their communities, they were always the first to help,” Manes says. “And they took this slop, if you will, and made a beautiful clear liquid that they could make some money off of. I just found it fascinating, the whole process.”

It wasn’t long before Manes started working with Marvin Sutton, famously known as “Popcorn,” one of the most prolific Appalachian moonshiners in history. The subject of several documentary films, Popcorn died by suicide in 2009 after being convicted of several offenses related to moonshining.

Almost every piece of information out there about Manes, including his bio on the Discovery Channel website, states that Popcorn was essentially Manes’ mentor. But Manes tells me that’s not exactly true. He describes their relationship like an equal partnership, stating it was actually he who helped Popcorn build his first 500-gallon still. The two friends made moonshine together for more than 20 years, running the stills at all hours of the day until Manes was ready to walk away from moonshining all together.

“I was getting tired of it. I had a new child born and I didn’t want to go to jail. Popcorn would flaunt it in front of everybody and that was kind of dangerous,” says Manes. “I told him, ‘I’m done, I’ve had enough, I appreciate all the fun, but it’s time to grow up and be a big boy. I want to raise this child and not worry about the TTB showing up and putting us in jail.’”

A few years later, Popcorn was arrested and sentenced to federal jail time.

    A star is born

Clearly, that wasn’t the end of Manes’ moonshine career. “I got into home brewing beer and wine to try to scratch my itch, but it didn’t quite work,” he admits. The next time around, he joined forces with a less dangerous and extra jolly partner, Mark Ramsey.

Best friends for more than 30 years, Ramsey is Manes’ beloved cohort on Moonshiners, and the two are often described as an old married couple. “We finish each other’s sentences,” Manes says. “You can’t disguise a good friendship and I guess that’s why we do so well. We do love each other like brothers and we’re not going to do anything to hurt one another.”

It was Ramsey who pushed for the two to join the cast of Moonshiners, but Manes says he wasn’t interested. To be honest, Manes seems completely indifferent to, if not slightly uncomfortable with, his fame. He only agreed when he was assured the show was one season short of cancellation. “I thought the show was done for, so I said, ‘If you want to do it, I’ll do it this last season because it’s about dead,’” he says. “And then it just took off. It was dying on the vine according to the producers. We come on season 4 and then season 5 ratings go through the roof.”

Season 9 of Moonshiners aired this spring, and it’s difficult not to give the charismatic duo most of the credit for the show’s revival. They’ve even joined the judge’s panel on Discovery Channel’s Master Distiller, a new reality competition show for budding distillers. Manes says they’re stopped on the street constantly by fans asking to take photos. “If it puts a smile on their face chatting with a country bumpkin like me, so be it,” he humbly concedes.

During our interview, and with incredible timing, Manes pauses to read a text from Ramsey. “We’re good for Season 10,” it reads.

“I don’t know whether to jump for joy or cry like a baby,” Manes says.

    Hometown hero

Every minute Manes isn’t filming, he’s minding his store, which opened in 2018. Because distilling is still illegal in Tennessee, he sells beer and winemaking supplies and hosts classes on the two crafts. “I don’t see any reason to help someone break the law,” he says. “But I have a lot of buddies that make beer around here, so I figured I’ll just get in the business of supplying them.”

Just like Manes didn’t get into moonshining for the money, he didn’t start his business for it either. Instead, his aim is to be a sort of pillar of his community. To start, he’s hoping to build some momentum in Newport, which has a population of roughly 7,000 and is passed over by tourists for the big, bright lights of Gatlinburg or other Smoky Mountain hot spots.

Manes and his wife took a big risk to kickstart a downtown revitalization with their businesses, but slowly, others are following. The street looks pretty empty, but he says Newport now has an ice cream parlor, a hair salon, a firearm store, and a food truck that’s looking to open a brick-and-mortar.

“Being the town undertaker’s son, my parents worked every day and I would come to work with my dad. I was in every nook and cranny of this downtown area and it’s home to me,” he says. “I could walk into every store and name everyone who worked there and I miss that. We’ve become so disconnected from our communities and people don’t take time to be kind and speak to each other and have little conversations like, ‘Did you fish this week?’ I’d love to see it get back to that.”

The Moonshiners outlaws are back in action, and much like the proof of the liquor they've been making for generations, the stakes are higher than ever. The hit Discovery Channel show returns with a brand new season on Tuesday, Nov. 19, PopCulture.com can exclusively announce, and features the return of fan-favorite moonshiner Tickle after his stint in jail.

"Moonshiners have passed on this art from generation to generation," Tickle says in the season's first trailer. "Everybody in the world knows it's illegal, but you know what? We don't care. These are our roots — the old ways, they're good ways. Hell no, you ain't never shuttin' us down."

Even after his brush with the law, Tickle finds it hard to stay away from the outlaw lifestyle that has drawn a select few in the remote corners of Appalachia to the secrets of distilling high-dollar shine while outrunning and outsmarting local law enforcement — as well as their fellow shiners. Teaming up with the legendary outlaws Henry and Kenny Law, Tickle is putting the pressure on best friend Tim Smith, a legal shiner drawn by the allure of the potential profit of the new partnership, according to Discovery.

Meanwhile, Mark and Digger are feeling the pressure as they try to reverse-engineer legendary shiner Popcorn Sutton's multi-grain moonshine recipe, putting them at odds with a rival shiner who wants the profit and the glory for themselves.

Mike and Daniel will also be tested in their partnership after an injury puts a halt to their ambitious backwoods build., while Josh recovers from his broken back to carry on four traditions of moonshine tradition with his biggest-ever underground build and a brand new partnership.

Don't miss the premiere of an all-new season of Moonshiners, coming to Discovery Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Fans can watch the new season, as well as catch up on previous seasons, on Discovery GO.

Moonshiners is produced for Discovery Channel by Magilla Entertainment. Executive producers for Magilla Entertainment are Matthew Ostrom, Laura Palumbo Johnson, Jason Fox and Chris Tetens with David Jacobs serving as co-executive producer.
