What’s the Interview Process Like?

Goldman Sachs Internship Acceptance Rate (1)

For candidates who make it past the initial resume screening, the interview process for Goldman Sachs interns consists of two steps: Prospective software engineering interns will have to put in a little extra time– they have to pass a coding challenge as well.

1. A HireVue Video

For the HireVue video interview, candidates will be given a link that they can log into at any point before it expires, and it’ll prompt them to record their answers to a series of questions to see if they’re a fit. One former Goldman Sachs intern called the HireVue interview “the hardest part of the whole process.” Knowing he’d be thrown off by the time pressure and unnatural process of answering questions in front of a blank screen, he spent two days preparing for the 30-minute video interview.

2. An In-Person Superday.

If the recruiters decide to advance you past the HireVue stage, you’ll be invited to a superday at a Goldman Sachs office, with all expenses for the trip paid for by the company. At the superday, you’ll go through two to five interviews with Goldman Sachs employees for the division that you’re trying to work in. According to Goldman Sachs’s former Head of Human Capital Management Dane Holmes,

Holmes told CNBC that most questions don’t exactly have a right or wrong answer, but the interview is more about “analyzing how they work themselves through the process, and then assessing that.” Applicants are hired on a rolling basis, so candidates should hear back with a final decision a few days after the interviews.

How To Get A Job At Goldman Sachs

To be very frank, I think luck plays a huge part in getting a job at Goldman Sachs or any of the other bulge bracket firms. It has to when acceptance rates are in the single digits. In fact, I think luck plays a majority part in any outsized wealth you receive in your life.

Plenty of people are qualified. It’s only the lucky ones who get the offer, which is why you need to do things to stand out, or use your connections. Many of my first year analyst classmates had parents who either worked at Goldman or were actually private clients.

(Video) How To Get Into Goldman Sachs [Analyst and Summer Analyst Roles]

I went to The College of William and Mary, a public school and not a target university but ended up getting a front end job at their world headquarters. How? I sent in a resume at a career fair in Washington DC where Goldman was one of the many banks interviewing candidates. The recruiter chose mine, and I ended up flying to their headquarters for seven rounds and 55 interviews. Clearly, they had some doubts on whether to hire me!

But what I did do right was get on the bus to the career fair at 6 AM. I was the only student on the bus, so after waiting for 30 minutes, the driver drove me to his company headquarters and we switched to a Lincoln Towncar instead. Therefore, I would say half the battle is just showing up.

Whatever job you get, it’s like winning the lottery because many other people want that job as well. It’s what you do after Goldman or after any job you get that counts the most.

I ended up parlaying my job for a pay raise and an Associate title at another bulge bracket in San Francisco at 25 years old. At age 28, I was promoted to VP and then at age 31 I was promoted to Executive Director.

I worked at my new firm for 11 years before negotiating a severance to be free from work for the rest of my life. Below is an idea of how much you can make on Wall Street by level.

As of 2H2021, first-year analyst base salaries at Goldman Sachs is now $110,000. That is a 30% increase from $85,000 up to 1H2021. Then you get a year-end bonus.

Save and invest aggressively if you work in investment banking. After 10 years, I’m pretty certain you can coast for the rest of your life if you want to.

After leaving Wall Street in 2012, I’ve worked on building my own online lifestyle business. By 2017, I was making as much as the average Managing Director on Wall Street. The main difference is I spend 20 hours a week doing something I enjoy.

  • Be humble, but unique.
  • Always follow up each interview with a thank you e-mail and a particular point of emphasis from the interview. Hand written cards work well.
  • Hint that you have offers from other banks or other firms are interested if they ask
  • Leverage the alumni network and existing relationships
  • Have a view on the Federal Reserve and whether you think they are right in terms of their interest rate policy and why

  • Know how to lay out a bear case scenario and a bull case scenario
  • For example, here is my post on How To Predict A Stock Market Bottom Like Nostradamus. I wrote this post on March 18, 2020 when the stock market was tanking. If you can share your investment thought process with the interview in such a way, I think they will be vey impressed. Nobody knows the future. But Goldman Sachs employees will appreciate your thought process.

Day in the Life of a Goldman Sachs Investment Banking…

    Beecher Tuttle | E-Financial Careers

Getting an internship at Goldman Sachs is no easy task. This year, roughly 17,000 people applied for its investment banking summer internship program, according to Chief Operating Officer Gary Cohn. Just 350 interns were hired.

So what’s the key to finding the golden ticket? You’ve got to be really smart, that much is obvious. But there are plenty of people out there with sterling grade point averages, said Sandra Hurse, global co-head of campus recruiting at Goldman Sachs. The key differentiators are extracurriculars, community involvement and, perhaps most importantly, strong people skills.

“If we look at someone with a 4.0 GPA but with no extracurricular activities and compare that person to someone with a 3.6 GPA but who has other skills and commitments, to me, that is a more well-rounded candidate,” Hurse said.

A targeted resume can also help get your foot in the door. One of the biggest mistakes Hurse sees on resumes is when candidates simply list their activities, rather than documenting their achievements.

“People undersell themselves by not putting all their accomplishments and telling the full story,” she said. “A one page resume is fine, but make sure you are listing all your accomplishments in that one page.”

Goldman Sachs’s 10-week summer internship is serious business for the firm. Goldman uses the program as the major feeder for its full-time analyst and associate programs. “If we can fill 100% of our hiring needs from our summer internship program, we will.”

(Video) My Goldman Sachs Internship Interview Experience | Complete preparation strategy revealed!

As such, Goldman puts their interns right to work and evaluates daily. “Though interns have a week of training, most of their experience is not done in a classroom, but on the desk,” Hurse said. “Interns work with full-time analysts and senior people in their divisions so they get a sense of how the team operates.”

The end goal for most interns is to parlay the experience into a full-time offer. To succeed, interns need to show their bosses more than just their intellect – they also need to prove their people skills.

One of the bigger mistakes an intern can make is by keeping their head down and just doing their work, Hurse said. “As an intern, you need to pick your head up and build a network,” she said. “It’s a relationship-driven business, and we need people who can prove that they are capable of building relationships.”

Harvey Schwartz, Goldman’s CFO, recently said the firm has experienced some “recruiting tailwinds,” with more people wanting to work there. The competition is only getting tougher. You have to walk-the-walk, obviously, but it appears you also have to talk-the-talk. Polish up those relationship-building skills.

Other intern tips from Goldman Sachs:

    1. Speak and act with confidence

    2. Have your elevator speech prepared – be able to talk about your experience and your contributions in 2 minutes or less

    3. Build a network – meet with peers and professionals outside of your immediate area

    4. Be proactive

(Video) My Goldman Sachs Resume for Investment Banking

    5. Communicate – be clear and impactful, know the message you are trying to deliver

    6. Understand the business and how it contributes to the firm’s success

    7. Don’t be afraid to take a risk

    8. Under promise and over deliver

    9. Be yourself
