Jamal Murray & Tim Hardaway Jr. Clutch Performance | Nuggets vs Wizards Highlights (2026)

Imagine the air thick with disappointment, the buzz of victory replaced by a flat, almost apathetic hum. That's what faced the Denver Nuggets on Saturday night, fresh off the Broncos' thrilling win just across the parking lot. But even with a sluggish start, Jamal Murray and Tim Hardaway Jr. managed to inject some much-needed electricity into Ball Arena, rescuing the game from the doldrums. How did they do it, and why was it so crucial? Let's dive in.

The atmosphere inside the arena wasn't exactly electric. A wave of orange and blue faithful had migrated from Empower Field after the Broncos' nail-biting victory, settling in to watch the Nuggets take on the Washington Wizards – a team that, statistically, was struggling mightily. The Wizards came in with the NBA’s worst net rating and the second-worst record in the Eastern Conference.

"It was kind of dead in there for a little bit, because everybody was on the Broncos game," Nuggets guard Jamal Murray admitted, echoing the sentiment felt by many. "I feel like they got to us, and it was like ‘Oh, whatever.’" It’s almost as if the Broncos' victory hangover had spread to the basketball court.

Adding insult to injury, news broke during the game about an injury to Broncos quarterback Bo Nix. Nuggets coach David Adelman, a known Buffalo Bills enthusiast, had mixed feelings. He was disappointed in his team's rebounding effort and the officiating in his beloved Bills game. But he was ultimately happy for the city of Denver after a 2-0 day. "I heard it was a catch, but they said it wasn’t,” Adelman said of a controversial call late in the Broncos win. "I’ll be honest really quick, amazing game and super happy for Denver, but I feel terrible for Bo Nix. … It’s stuff like that in sports you hate seeing, because it’s not deserved after a game like that. You want the team that moves on to go with the momentum they have, so the next game is as good as that one was. Super bummed for my team, but it’s really cool for the city of Denver."

Even Aaron Gordon, known for his pregame focus, couldn't resist sneaking a peek at Wil Lutz's game-winning field goal on the Jumbotron. Fast forward a couple of hours, and Gordon was contributing his own clutch moments, sinking a go-ahead 3-pointer and throwing down a reverse alley-oop dunk that extended Denver's lead. But here's where it gets interesting: outside of those highlights, and a single floater from Bruce Brown earlier in the fourth, the entire quarter's scoring belonged to Murray and Hardaway Jr. That's right; they were the fourth quarter.

Murray exploded for 16 of his game-high 42 points in the final quarter, while Hardaway Jr. added 15 of his 30. These two provided the spark that ignited the Nuggets' comeback 121-115 victory after trailing by 7 with 10 minutes to go.

“I know there really wasn’t that much energy in the building today,” Hardaway said. “I think everybody was still on a high from the Broncos game. Congrats to those guys, huge win. I think they all came over here, and I think all their energy was gone. We just tried to find our own energy in ourselves. I just tried to do the best I could to come off the bench and be that sparkplug.” It’s a testament to their individual skill, but also their ability to rise above circumstances. And this is the part most people miss: sometimes, individual brilliance is exactly what a team needs to overcome a collective slump.

Peyton Watson was the only other Nugget in double figures with 21 points. Kyshawn George led the Wizards with 29 points.

“It felt like a game we were going to fall behind, honestly, just with the energy,” Adelman said. “I thought the guys just found a way in the fourth quarter to galvanize themselves, get themselves going. There’s a lot of ways to win these games. … If we lost this game, we would remember it. We won’t remember this game now because we won it. It’s just part of the tally of the season. There’s just certain nights where the energy is off, and you just have to find a way to stay in it long enough to win it. That’s what we did.”

Game Breakdown:

  • The Turnaround: Washington initially erased Denver's first-quarter lead, even holding a narrow advantage at halftime (63-62). They maintained a slight lead going into the fourth, but Denver's explosive 38-point quarter flipped the script.
  • Bright Spots: Aaron Gordon showcased his versatility, dishing out 11 assists while playing center and grabbing 10 rebounds. He narrowly missed a triple-double, falling just two points short.
  • Areas for Improvement: The Wizards dominated the offensive glass, securing 17 offensive rebounds and converting them into a commanding 27-4 advantage in second-chance points. Six different Wizards players snagged multiple offensive boards. This is a glaring area the Nuggets will need to address.
  • Highlight Reel: Tim Hardaway Jr.'s driving left-handed dunk, which gave Denver a two-point lead late in the game, was a definite crowd-pleaser and a season-high moment.

Looking Ahead: The Nuggets return to Ball Arena to face the Hornets on Sunday. Will they carry the momentum from this hard-fought win, or will the lingering effects of the Broncos' victory (and perhaps a touch of fatigue) continue to be a factor?

Ultimately, the Nuggets' victory over the Wizards was a testament to individual brilliance and resilience in the face of adversity. But does relying on individual performances solve a larger problem with team energy and consistency? Is it sustainable in the long run, especially against tougher opponents? And perhaps more controversially, should the Nuggets management focus on getting players that can bring energy even when the team is down? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
