A bold statement has been made by Jon Sumrall, the newly appointed head coach of Florida's college football team, as he labels the current college football calendar as 'asinine' and 'absurd'. Sumrall's comments have sparked a debate and raised important questions about the future of the sport.
The College Football Playoff recently announced its plans for the 2026 and 2027 seasons, including the dates and locations for the quarterfinal and semifinal games. However, Sumrall believes that the calendar needs a significant overhaul. He proposes a shift in the entire season, suggesting it should start earlier and end closer to the beginning of January, rather than dragging on until late January or early February.
"I'd love to see the season moved up by a week or two," Sumrall passionately stated. "It's absurd that the college football championship game is scheduled for January 25th next year. That means the midpoint of the season falls in late November, which feels all wrong. We could discuss this for hours, but there are other aspects to consider as well."
Sumrall's concerns extend beyond just the calendar. He highlights the disconnect between the academic calendar and the football season, a mismatch that he believes creates unnecessary complications. He advocates for a realignment of these schedules to better accommodate both the players' academic commitments and the sport's traditions.
"The academic calendar and the football season no longer align as they used to, which is a mess for us old-school football coaches. It's a bit of a mess. But we can fix this by moving the season up, starting the Playoffs earlier, and ending them sooner. Let's bring back the old-school feel of the January 1st National Championship Game. Maybe not the first Monday, but the fourth would be ideal."
While Sumrall's ideas are intriguing, they may not see the light of day anytime soon. The dates for the upcoming CFP seasons have already been set, meaning any changes would have to wait until at least 2028.
