What was this lawsuit about?
A proposed class action lawsuit filed in June 2019—Bentley et al. v. LG Electronics U.S.A., Inc.— alleged certain refrigerators manufactured by LG Electronics simply stopped cooling food and beverages due to a defective compressor part. The plaintiffs alleged LG knew about the defective compressor in affected models yet continued selling the fridges without disclosing the problem or providing adequate warranty or repair service.
LG denies the plaintiffs’ allegations and has agreed to settle the case after numerous rounds of mediation. The court has not decided in favor of the plaintiffs or LG.
The settlement received preliminary approval from U.S. District Judge Madeline Cox Arleo on August 19, 2020. The deal resolves both Bentley et al. v. LG Electronics U.S.A., Inc. and Sosenko, et al. v. LG Electronics U.S.A., Inc., in which a consumer made similar allegations.
