Unlocking the Mystery of the Tiny Tree Killer
A tiny beetle, the polyphagous shot-hole borer (PSHB), has been wreaking havoc on Western Australia's trees since its discovery in 2021. But here's the catch: it's smaller than a sesame seed!

A team led by PhD student Md Shahidul Islam Khan and Associate Professors Wei Xu and Rob Emery successfully grew the first PSHB lab colony. By replicating the beetle's natural conditions, they observed typical behaviors, including tunneling and fungus growth.
This achievement is monumental! Scientists can now study the borer's life cycle, behaviors, and responses to chemical cues under controlled conditions. As Mr. Khan highlights, this enables the rapid and safe screening of potential attractants, repellents, and eco-friendly control tools, crucial for early detection and long-term management.
