Health Alert: Measles Risk After Exposure to Positive Case

A recent health alert has been issued by the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District, urging individuals who visited specific locations in St Clair and Nepean Hospital's Emergency Department last week to be vigilant about potential measles exposure.

On Wednesday, January 14, between 3 pm and 4 pm, a confirmed measles case was at the Priceline Pharmacy in St Clair. Subsequently, the same individual was at the Nepean Hospital Emergency Department from 7:50 pm on Friday, January 16, until 7:40 pm on Saturday, January 17.

Despite the potential risk, it's important to note that these locations are no longer considered hazardous. However, individuals who were present during these times are advised to monitor for symptoms until early February.

Dr. Alvis Zibran, a Public Health Specialist, emphasizes the importance of seeking medical attention if symptoms arise. He recommends contacting your doctor or health service, including emergency departments, and informing them of potential measles exposure to avoid waiting in crowded areas.

Symptoms to watch for include fever, a runny nose, sore eyes, and a cough, followed by a characteristic red, blotchy rash that typically spreads from the head to the body three to four days later. It's crucial to remember that symptoms may take up to 18 days to appear after exposure.

Measles, a vaccine-preventable disease, spreads through airborne transmission when an infectious individual coughs or sneezes. Dr. Zibran stresses the importance of community-wide vaccination efforts, especially for those born after 1965, who should ensure they have received two doses of the measles vaccine, particularly before international travel.

The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is both safe and effective, administered for free to children at 12 and 18 months of age. Similarly, individuals born after 1965 in NSW who haven't received two doses can access the vaccine at no cost.

This alert serves as a reminder for the community to stay informed and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and others from the highly contagious measles virus.
