On a fateful Saturday night, Ivankovic, a Nashville Predators draft pick and NCAA leader in wins, was forced to exit the game against Notre Dame after a collision with Irish forward Danny Nelson. This unexpected turn of events thrust freshman Stephen Peck into the spotlight, making his NCAA debut.
Head coach Brandon Naurato, fresh from signing a contract extension through 2030, expressed hope for Ivankovic's return but acknowledged that Peck will be the team's goalie for the foreseeable future. Despite this setback, the top-ranked Wolverines (18-4, 9-3 Big Ten) are confident as they enter the heart of their schedule.
"Our team identity is our team identity," Naurato emphasized. "We won't alter our style of play just because of a different goalie. We trust Steve, and we'll be ready to go. I'm excited for the weekend."
Peck, who stopped 18 of 21 shots in his first action, demonstrated his mettle during a crucial power-play situation. With Michigan forward Josh Eernisse serving a five-minute major for cross-checking Nelson, Peck stepped up big during the penalty kill, helping the team maintain a 3-1 lead.
