A Royal Life Comes to an End: Princess Irene of Greece Passes Away

The announcement came from the Zarzuela Palace in Madrid, confirming the princess's death after a period of declining health. Princess Irene, sister of the former Queen of Spain, Sofia, was a cherished member of the Greek Royal Family. The statement expressed profound sadness, noting that she passed away on January 15th, 2016, surrounded by loved ones at the Zarzuela Palace. Details regarding her funeral will be announced later.
Earlier in the week, Queen Sofia had to cancel her engagements due to her sister's fragile health. The sisters were daughters of the late King Paul and Queen Frederica of Greece. Their brother, the former King Constantine of Greece, passed away in 2023.
Princess Irene never married and remained close to her sister, residing in an apartment in Spain after Queen Sofia married former King Juan Carlos. She was last seen in public about a year ago at the wedding of her nephew, Prince Nikolaos of Greece, in Athens, where she attended the event in a wheelchair.
Princess Irene was often seen with her nephew, the current King Felipe of Spain, and his family, including Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor, and Princess Sofia.
The Greek Royal Family has strong ties to the British royals. The late Prince Philip was born on the island of Corfu and was a first cousin to Irene's father, King Paul. Her late brother, King Constantine, was a close friend of King Charles and Prince William's godfather. He was also the godfather of Lady Gabriella Kingston, the daughter of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent.
A memorial service was held for King Constantine in Windsor in February 2024, a year after his death. King Charles was unable to attend Constantine's funeral in Athens due to prior commitments. Princess Anne represented him at the service. Constantine ascended to the throne at the young age of 23 in 1964. Initially, he was very popular, even winning an Olympic gold in sailing.
He married Princess Anne-Marie, the youngest daughter of King Frederick IX of Denmark. They had five children: Princess Alexia, Crown Prince Pavlos, Prince Nikolaos, Princess Theodora, and Prince Philippos. They live in Europe and New York.
But here's where it gets controversial... By 1965, Constantine's popularity waned due to his involvement in the events that led to the downfall of the Centre Union government. This event, known in Greece as the 'apostasy,' destabilized the constitutional order, leading to a military coup in 1967.
Constantine eventually clashed with the military rulers and was forced into exile. The monarchy was abolished in 1973, and a referendum after democracy was restored in 1974 dashed any hopes of his return. He lived in exile for many years before returning to Greece in 2013.
