Singapore Overhang Solar Power Pilot: Reaching 2GW Renewable Energy Goal (2026)

Singapore is taking a bold step towards sustainable energy with the introduction of 'overhang' solar power structures. The city-state is on a mission to meet its ambitious 2 GWp target, which is equivalent to the annual electricity needs of approximately 350,000 households. And they're getting closer! As of now, Singapore has already deployed 1,775.4 megawatt-peak of PV systems nationwide, with a goal to reach 2 gigawatt-peak (GWp) by 2030. This ambitious target is a testament to Singapore's commitment to renewable energy and its determination to reduce its carbon footprint. But here's the exciting part: JTC Corp, an industrial landlord, has launched a tender to develop Singapore's first 'overhang' solar photovoltaic (PV) system. This innovative approach involves building large structures across the spaces between multi-storey industrial buildings, maximizing solar exposure while maintaining structural integrity and safety. The tender is for an overhang structure at 15 Woodlands Loop, and it's just the beginning. The project aims to achieve a minimum installation capacity of 250 kilowatt-peak across a 4,300 square-meter space between the buildings. Once operational, the generated electricity will be exported to the national grid for 10 years. This is a significant step towards Singapore's energy goals, as solar power could meet around 10% of the country's projected electricity demand by 2050. JTC's chief sustainability officer, Finn Tay, emphasizes the importance of this initiative, stating, 'We are pushing ourselves to look beyond conventional rooftops and ground-mounted systems.' This pilot project is a prime example of Singapore's innovative approach to renewable energy, showcasing its determination to unlock new solar potential and support its long-term energy goals.
