Prepare for some exciting news in the realm of space exploration! SpaceX is set to launch its next crewed mission for NASA on February 11, marking a significant milestone as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has given the green light for the Falcon 9 rocket to resume its flights after a brief hiatus.
On Friday, February 6, the FAA announced that the Falcon 9 rocket is cleared to take off again, following a grounding period of four days due to an issue that arose with the rocket’s upper stage during a previous mission. This problem first emerged on February 2, when SpaceX launched 25 Starlink broadband satellites from California. While everything went according to plan with the deployment of the satellites into low Earth orbit, the upper stage of the rocket failed to execute its deorbit burn, resulting in an uncontrolled reentry back to Earth.
This incident marks the fourth occurrence of a problem with the Falcon 9's upper stage in just over a year and a half. Notably, one of these previous issues did not lead to an investigation, but two others did, causing delays of about two weeks before the rocket was allowed to fly again. In contrast, this most recent investigation concluded much more swiftly.
In an update, the FAA stated, "The FAA oversaw and accepted the findings of the SpaceX-led investigation. The final mishap report indicates that the probable root cause was the failure of the Falcon 9 stage 2 engine to ignite before the deorbit burn. SpaceX has implemented technical and organizational preventative measures to prevent a recurrence of this event. The Falcon 9 vehicle is now authorized to return to flight."
Now, let's talk about the upcoming Crew-12 mission! Scheduled to launch on Wednesday morning, this mission will transport four astronauts: NASA's Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev, and Sophie Adenot from the European Space Agency. Their journey aboard the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule named "Freedom" will take them to the International Space Station (ISS), where they are expected to stay for approximately nine months.
