Howthe BEST Red Velvet Snickerdoodle Recipe was Created

This recipe was developed because of my son’s ramblings.

My adorable little eight year old sits and thinks. He then shares his fabulous ideas.

Today it came in the reflection of his favorite flavors. He said, “My favorite cookie flavor is a snickerdoodle. I also love red velvet cake. They should really make a red velvet snickerdoodle cookie.”

OK – Future recipe maker, that is a brilliant idea! The flavors of red velvet and snickerdoodle would work great together – especially during the holiday season.

An idea was born.

The recipe was created.

How did I adapt my snickerdoodle recipe? Every good red velvet anything needs cocoa powder and red food coloring. Beyond that, I added some vanilla because everything is better with vanilla. I also changed just white sugar to a combo of white and brown sugar to add depth.

We were all delighted with the results. This winning combination had to be shared with you.

Please note that the dough will be somewhat thick. Don’t worry. That is what it is supposed to look like.

You have both my son and my daughter to thank for this recipe. She was my little baker for the day.

Baking with Kids

I always want to use a new dessert recipe as an opportunity to encourage you to get baking with your kids.

They say the kitchen is the heart of the home. I believe this is true. Not only do you create memories in the kitchen, but you also promote learning.

When baking, children learn how to read instructions, measure, and develop math skills. They also develop fine motor skills.

Yes, it will probably take you a little bit longer when your children are younger. There will be more spills. However, the sense of family that is fostered in the kitchen is well worth it.

Now that my children are older, the years spent baking together a paying off. It no longer takes longer to bake. They have become such amazing helpers and can do most (probably even all) on their own.

At what point do you add the cocoa powder? When combining all the dry ingredients? You mention to combine everything but that.
