The Power of Collaboration: How 700 Shluchim Created a Megillah App in 10 Days (2026)

In a remarkable display of collaboration and innovation, a group of dedicated Shluchim achieved the extraordinary in just ten days. The power of unity and technology was showcased as they built a Megillah app, bringing the Purim story to life for communities worldwide.

With less than two weeks until Purim, Rabbi Mendy Elishevitz shared a link to a WhatsApp group, sparking an incredible journey.

The requests and ideas poured in: translations, shorter reading times, interactive features, and more. Rayi Stern, the head of AI at Merkos 302, suggested an open-source approach, inviting everyone to collaborate on GitHub.

"Beyond the cool factor, it's witnessing live collaboration and innovation that's truly inspiring," one Shliach remarked.

Rabbi Mendy Kotlarsky, Executive Director of Merkos 302, emphasized the Rebbe's vision: "The unique power of Shluchim working together and utilizing technology to spread Yiddishkeit." And so, they did just that, pushing the boundaries of what was possible.

"The Rebbe always emphasized the unique power of Shluchim working together and the importance of utilizing technology to spread Yiddishkeit," said Rabbi Mendy Kotlarsky, Executive Director of Merkos 302 and Director of the International Kinus Hashluchim, at the AI meetup at this year's Kinus. "Today we can combine both to create collaborative projects that reach new frontiers of Shlichus we never could have imagined until now."

The result? A Megillah app with features that surpassed any single developer's capabilities. Live synchronized reading, AI-generated illustrations, reading time estimates, translations, and a grogger button—all tailored to the unique needs of Shluchim and their communities.

But here's where it gets even more impressive: the app was built by Shluchim, drawing on their real-world experience. They understood the challenges of conducting a Megillah reading with a room full of enthusiastic groggers. This on-the-ground wisdom, multiplied across hundreds of contributors, led to a perfect synergy.

Each feature built upon the next, with improvements inspiring new ideas. The community shaped the tool, and the tool, in turn, served the community better. It was a beautiful cycle, bringing more Shluchim together and fostering a culture of collaboration.

"This is the perfect example of what can be achieved with AI and the power of collaboration," one Shliach said.

On Purim 5786, Shluchim worldwide read the Megillah using an app built by their own community, for their own community, and for anyone else who wished to join. megillah.app is a testament to the potential of technology when harnessed with a unified vision.

The app is free, accessible to all, and requires no download or account. Just open it, share the link, and be a part of this incredible initiative.

Full updates and special recognition can be found at megillah.app/updates, celebrating the efforts of Rabbi Mendy Elishevitz, Rabbi Mendy Shishler, Rayi Stern, TorahApp.org, Kehot Publication Society, and all the Shluchim who made this possible.

So, what do you think? Is this a glimpse into the future of religious technology? Or is it a step too far for some? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
