USA vs. Mexico final score, results: Mexico secures huge win behind Joey Meneses, Randy Arozarena | Sporting News (2024)

Mexico wasn't quite in a must-win situation Sunday night against the United States at the World Baseball Classic — Cuba did just come back from 0-2 to win Pool A — but it still felt like do-or-die following its gut-wrenching loss in extra innings to Colombia on Saturday.

El Tri bounced back in a huge way. The Nationals' Joey Meneses sparked an 11-5 rout of Team USA, which was forced to use eight pitchers. Meneses had a pair of home runs and scored a third time as Mexico improved to 1-1 in Pool C.

Rays outfielder Randy Arozarena turned in an excellent game for Mexico as well, showcasing once more the big-stage ability that fans first witnessed in the 2020 MLB postseason. Arozarena went 3 for 5 and drove in a pair of runs to continue his impressive WBC work at the plate.

Mexico starter Patrick Sandoval didn't look at all intimidated by the highly touted USA lineup. The Angels left-hander allowed two hits and a run over three innings while striking out two. Cubs prospect Javier Assad went the next three and allowed just a run on a hit.

MORE:Time, TV schedule to watch USA vs. Canada

USA manager Mark DeRosa's inexperience peeked through in this game. A clearly struggling Brady Singer was getting touched up but no one was warming in the bullpen. Meneses then launched his second homer of the game, a three-run shot in the fourth to put Mexico up 7-1. The game is sure to be a learning experience for DeRosa and the USA staff, but with a game against Canada on Monday, they'll have to learn quick.

MORE:

Mexico jumps up in the standings and now finds itself in solid shape in the pool standings. What's more, it will have Monday off before taking on Great Britain on Tuesday.

This game could very well be a wake-up call for the United States. It looked sluggish against Great Britain and lethargic against Mexico. It will need to right the ship quickly.

USA vs. Mexico live updates, highlights from World Baseball Classic

1:51 a.m. --Mullins drives one to center and a busy Alek Thomas tracks it down for the second out. Goldschmidt comes up now with two outs, and he flies out, fittingly, to Thomas to end the game. Mexico wins 11-5 in a dominant performance.

1:50 a.m. --Betts has been under everything tonight, flying out for the fourth time to Duran in right. Mullins will now step up for Team USA.

1:48 a.m. --That's one way to hit against the shift. McNeil has an excuse-me swing the other way to get on against the heavy shift, and Betts comes up with nobody out and McNeil on first.

1:46 a.m. --Gerardo Reyes takes the mound for Mexico against McNeil, Betts, and Mullins if Mullins stays in.

1:42 a.m. --Cardona gets wrung up looking on strike three there from Pressly. And Duran comes up and quickly grounds out in front of home plate. USA will be up for the bottom of the ninth, presumably facing someone other than Zazueta.

1:40 a.m. --The Astros' Ryan Pressly will take the mound for the United States here in the top of the ninth. Austin Barnes jumps on a pitch and flies out. Cardona will hit for Arozarena here.

1:37 a.m. --Smith had another good swing on it, but this one goes straight to Thomas in dead center to get Mexico out of the inning.

1:35 a.m. --Anderson ropes one down the third-base line and drives in two more. Good pice of hitting, and Zazueta gets a visit to the mound. Will Smith comes up, and Zazueta has to stay in for Smith at least. Regardless, this will likely be the last batter he faces.

1:33 a.m. --Tucker worked the count full on Zazueta, and he draws the walk. That's big, as the righty Anderson now comes up against Zazueta. Again, cutting into this lead matters for tiebreaker purposes for the United States.

1:30 a.m. --Samuel Zazueta takes the mound for Mexico.

1:27 a.m. --Alonso got under another one and skied it for the second out of the inning. Vargas is going to get the ball taken from him by Gil, and Kyle Tucker will be facing someone different as he tries to at least narrow the gap.

1:25 a.m. --Alonso steps up for the United States now, still looking for his first hit.

1:23 a.m. --Witt makes an impact here, as he laces one the other way for an RBI double. Good piece of hitting there to give the United States another run. He plates Mullins to make it 11-3.

1:20 a.m. --Bobby Witt Jr. will pinch hit for Arenado as the United States continues to empty the bench.

1:19 a.m. --Trout comes out of the game and Cedric Mullins will run for him. Goldschmidt yanks one to left for a hit to put runners on first and second with one out.

1:18 a.m. --After the count goes full, Trout takes ball four at the ankles to bring Goldschmidt up.

1:16 a.m. --Betts grounds out into the shift behind second, and Trout steps up for the United States.

1:15 a.m. --César Vargas now takes the mound for Mexico, and Duran takes over for his teammate Verdugo in right after pinch running for him. Betts will lead off for the United States, with Trout and Goldschmidt to follow.

1:12 a.m. --Williams' first pitch get hit hard but right at McNeil by Thomas. He gets out of the inning with one pitch, so we head to the bottom of the eighth in an 11-2 game.

1:09 a.m. --Mexico continues to creep closer to a chance at an eight-inning mercy. Trejo roped one to left to drive in Tellez, and Bard will get the hook after 2/3 of an inning. The Brewers' Devin Williams will look to get Team USA out of this inning.

1:06 a.m. --Bard missed with the payoff pitch inside and Will Smith couldn't handle the pitch. Despite an ambitious turn from Tellez, he held at second. That'll bring up Trejo with two outs.

1:02 a.m. --Bard gets Paredes looking at strike three there for the second out of the inning. Urías is now up for Mexico, hoping to potentially give Mexico's pitching a chance to put away Team USA in the bottom of the eighth.

1 a.m. --The rout continues, as Tellez punches it through the pulled-in infield to score both Arozarena and Duran. Mexico takes a 10-2 lead on Tellez's third hit, and the dominance continues. Paredes is up for Mexico.

12:59 a.m. --Meneses jolted the crowd with a high fly ball to dead center. Trout catches it with ease but Arozarena advances to third. Pinch runner Jarren Duran holds at first. Tellez is up with runners at the corners and one out. Duran, however, steals second immediately.

12:57 a.m. --Bard hits Verdugo with a curveball in the dirt to put runners on first and second, still nobody out. Pettitte is back out to talk to Bard, and Meneses is at the plate.

12:55 a.m. --Verdugo has Bard pretty well-timed up with Bard coming inside on him. Bard will have to get creative to get Verdugo after going up 0-2.

12:51 a.m. --Arozarena scorches one into the corner for a double after past ball advanced Barnes to second. Barnes scored to make it8-2Mexico, as they look to slam the door on the United States. Verdugo comes up next with nobody on and a runner on second.

12:50 a.m. --Daniel Bard takes the mound now for the United States, and Barnes quickly takes a single the other way. The order turns over to Arozarena now with the leadoff man on.

12:47 a.m. --McNeil flies out to left to end the inning, so the damage for Romero is minimal.

12:46 a.m. --Spoke too soon about that pitching. Will Smith torches one to left for a home run to make it 7-2 Mexico here in the seventh. Romero left it hanging over and Smith made him pay.

12:45 a.m. --Romero gets Anderson swinging on a high fastball for the second out of the inning, as Mexico pitching continues to roll. That now brings up Smith, who's 0 for 2.

12:44 a.m. --Tucker flies out to Thomas in left center for the first out of the inning. Tim Anderson comes up next.

12:43 a.m. --Kyle Tucker comes up for the United States, and JoJo Romero of the Cardinals is on the mound.

12:39 a.m. --Loup gets Trejo swinging with that sweeping cutter again, bringing up Thomas with two out. Thomas pops out to Arenado at third to end the inning.

12:35 a.m. --Urías now singles up the middle, although Tellez only advances a base. That brings up Trejo with two on and one out, as Loup tries to come out of this unscathed. In case it becomes relevant, if Mexico leads by 10 after seven complete innings, the mercy rule comes into play.

12:32 a.m. --Loup gets Paredes swinging on the cutter at the ankles for the first strike. Urías comes up now with one out one on.

12:30 a.m. --Tellez beats the numbers with a single into centerfield to start the inning. Paredes comes up next for Mexico with Tellez on first and no one out.

12:29 a.m. --Aaron Loup is on the mound for the United States, and he'll start against Tellez.

12:26 a.m. --Assad gets Alonso swinging on a slider out of the zone, ending the USA frame. Mexico pitching has been outstanding just about all night.

12:23 a.m. --Urías makes a great play as he crosses up with the shortstop Trejo to get Trout on a force. That's two out for Team USA. Arenado is on first with Alonso coming up.

12:21 a.m. --Goldschmidt pops out in foul territory to first, bringing Arenado up with one out and Trout on first.

12:20 a.m. --Trout makes the best contact since the Anderson RBI single in the second, going the other way against he shift for a leadoff hit. Goldschmidt comes up looking to spark a rally for Team USA.

12:19 a.m. --Assad remains on the mound for Mexico, facing off against Trout-Goldschmidt-Arenado.

12:15 a.m. --Meneses' grounder is cut-off by Arenado, who throws him out with ease to end the inning. Mexico doesn't score despite the leadoff walk.

12:13 a.m. --Verdugo flies out to center, but not deep enough to advance Barnes. Meneses now comes up looking to build on his already-burgeoning legend.

12:12 a.m. --Ottavino got Arozarena swinging out of his helmet with a 2-2 slider. That brings Verdugo up with one out and Barnes on second.

12:11 a.m. --Mexico remains aggressive on the basepaths, as Barnes swipes second. Mexico has a runner in scoring position with nobody out. Arozarena is now at 2-2.

12:09 a.m. --He draws the walk two pitches later, however, putting a runner on with no out. Arozarena now digs in for Mexico.

12:08 a.m. --Barnes got yanked back by the ump on a 3-1 pitch that was called a strike to bring the count full.

12:07 a.m. --Adam Ottavino takes the mound for the United States, with Singer approaching his limit after two innings. He'll see Barnes first before the order turns back over to Arozarena.

12:05 a.m. --Betts hit it well but again, to straightaway center. Thomas gloves it easily, and the United States are out in the fifth. Another clean inning for Assad.

12:04 a.m. --McNeil slaps one to the third baseman, positioned at short, for the second out of the inning. Betts will come up with two down looking to put Assad under some durress.

12:02 a.m. --Smith took one for a ride into the alley in right center, but Thomas chases it down for a running catch and an out. Assad has 12 pitches through 1 1/3 with McNeil coming up next.

11:59 p.m. --Singer successfully bounces back that inning with a flyout to left for the final out. Team USA will try to bounce back here in the bottom of the fifth.

11:57 p.m. --Trejo hits one between Arenado and Anderson that Anderson spears, but there's no play to be had. Thomas comes up with a man on and two out.

11:56 p.m. --Urías grounds out to Arenado at third for the second out of the inning. Trejo will come up to try to keep the inning alive.

11:55 p.m. --Paredes flies out to Betts in right, bringing up Urías with one out.

11:53 p.m. --Singer is back out to face Paredes. It's possibly conservation of arms, but Singer is already approaching 40 pitches tonight.

11:50 p.m. --Anderson grounds out to Trejo at short to end the inning. Clean work from Assad in his first frame.

11:48 p.m. --Tucker grounds out to Meneses at first, bringing up Anderson with two out.

11:46 p.m. --Nasty work from Assad to get Alonso swinging with a 97 mph fastball. One down for the United States. Kyle Tucker, USA's lone run, up next.

11:44 p.m. --Javier Assad now takes the mound for Mexico with a big lead to work with, and Pete Alonso leads off for Team USA. Regardless of whether the United States wins or loses, they now need to chip away at this lead for tie breaker reasons if it comes to that.

11:42 p.m. --A bat flip for the ages by Meneses as well. This crowd is hype. Tellez grounds out to second into the shift, but the damage is done.

11:40 p.m. --MENESES DOES IT AGAIN.He hit the homer in the first. He scored the run in the third. And now he smokes a three-run shot to put Mexico up 7-1. Huge game for the rising National, and Singer is still in the game against Rowdy Tellez.

— FOX Sports: MLB (@MLBONFOX) March 13, 2023

11:38 p.m. --The count goes full for Singer against Verdugo, and he walks him with the payoff pitch. Singer will now see Joey Meneses three pitches away from 30, which would bar him from pitching Monday against Canada.

11:37 p.m. --No one is up in the USA bullpen as Singer approaches 30 pitches. DeRosa clearly wants the young pitcher to work his way out of it.

11:33 p.m. --Arozarena smelled blood in the water when the count went 2-0 and took a huge swing. He swung through it, but didn't miss the next one. Arozarena goes the other way for a double to drive in another run, and the Mexico bats continue to give USA pitching fits with two outs.Mexico 4, USA 1.

11:31 p.m. --Singer gets to a full count against Barnes, and gets him swinging with a nifty slider off the plate. The fans behind him were thrilled to punch Barnes out. The order turns over to Arozarena here.

11:28 p.m. --Good swing there from Thomas going the other way. Diamondback fans, keep an eye on him. He's getting a big lead at first, and Barnes is at the plate. A wild pitch sends Thomas to second.

11:26 p.m. --Singer gets Trejo looking on a full count there with a bit of paint. Trejo didn't like the call, but somewhere, dozens of Little League coaches are muttering "too close to take there."

11:25 p.m. --Graveman got just one at-bat, and DeRosa now turns to Royals dealer Brady Singer. Singer will hammer the zone low and pitch to contact to elicit ground balls.

11:22 p.m. --This has been an effective, but stressful, inning for Sandoval. The count goes full again to Arenado, who grounds out to Trejo at short to end the inning. At 55 pitches that will probably be it for Sandoval, but a great outing for him overall.

11:18 p.m. --Sandoval's confidence in his slider is so impressive. He gets Goldschmidt waving at a 2-2 slider for the second out of the inning. It's hard to overstate how impressive it is to see a lefty attacking right-handed bats inside like this, particularly ones this potent. Arenado comes up next trying to keep the inning alive.

11:15 p.m. --That pitch from Sandoval was CLOSE. Trout takes one just a bit hight and tight, arguably right on the black, but he's on first with one down. Great pitch, just didn't get the call. Goldschmidt now comes up.

11:13 p.m. --Sandoval has hammered Trout with three straight inside sliders to get the count full, but his teammate isn't going down without a fight.

11:11 p.m. --Bettsjustmissed that pitch, getting a hair underneath it and skying it to Thomas for the first out. That brings Trout up with one down and nobody on.

11:08 p.m. --Graveman gets Urías to ground out back to him, so Team USA is out of the inning with one run allowed. Some ground to make up here for the red white & blue bats.

11:05 p.m. --Kendall Graveman is on for the United States against Luis Urías. He'll look to make things clean here after a few tough breaks.

11:02 p.m. --Tough break for the United States, as the shift bites them here! McNeil is having a tough time. He was pulled on the left side of second base, and nearly made an unbelievable play to get Paredes. However, Goldschmidt bobbled the pick, and Meneses scores from third.Mexico 3, USA 1.Martinez is out of the game.

10:59 p.m. --Even against the shift, Rowdy Tellez's ball has eyes. He drops one between Trout and McNeil in no-man's-land to keep the inning alive, and DeRosa is deciding what to do about Martinez with an Andy Pettitte mind visit. Brady Singer and Kendall Graveman are up in the USA bullpen. Runners at the corners, two out.

10:57 p.m. --Meneses pulls one down the line and it looked like Arenado would make the play, but he bobbles it on the transfer and Menses is on with two out. Difficult play, but one Arenado would usually make. 52 pitches for Martinez, notably. 65 is the limit, so this will probably have to be his last inning.

10:54 p.m. --Verdugo pulls one into the shift on the right side for the second out, bringing up Joey Meneses with two down. He'll look for a similar result to last time.

10:52 p.m. --Arozarena led off for Mexico, and he put a ball into the Bermuda Triangle in foul territory. Tim Anderson tracks it down between Areanado and Tucker for the first out, bringing up Verdugo with one down.

10:48 p.m. --Good swing from McNeil, but it died off the bat and is played with ease by Thomas in center for the third out of the inning. Sandoval minimizes the damage, and Mexico keeps the lead after two.

10:47 p.m. --Will Smith came up with a hack against Sandoval, and he flies out to centerfield for the second out to bring up McNeil with two down.

10:44 p.m. --Anderson gives the United States the bottom of the order production it was missing against Great Britain, lacing one into right to drive in Tucker. 7-8-9 was 2-11 Saturday night. 1-1 tonight.Mexico 2, USA 1

After the K-Tuck triple, Tim Anderson brings him in and USA is on the board! pic.twitter.com/7rKCmR4NuE

— FOX Sports: MLB (@MLBONFOX) March 13, 2023

10:43 p.m. --Tucker, who looked somewhat uncomfortable at the plate against Great Britain Saturday, laces one down the right field line for a one-out triple. Great stroke there to give the United States a golden scoring opportunity with Tim Anderson coming up.

10:42 p.m. --Pete Alonso takes an aggressive swing and slices it down the right field line. Verdugo went on a bit of an adventure but he hauls it in for the first out. Kyle Tucker comes up next.

10:38 p.m. --Martinez gets Barnes swinging to end the inning, capping off a 1-2-3 frame. Good bounce-back there. Pete Alonso due up for the United States.

10:36 p.m. --The speedy Alek Thomas comes up first pitch swinging and flies out to shallow left. That brings up Austin Barnes, the catcher.

10:35 p.m. --Rockies shortstop Alan Trejo digs in for Mexico, and he strikes out at the hands of Martinez. Martinez is already up over 25 pitches in the second, so he'll look to keep that count low here in the second.

10:32 p.m. --Sandoval gets in on the hands of Arenado, who pops out to second for the third out of the inning. Mexico heads into the second with a 2-0 lead.

10:31 p.m. --Goldschmidt swipes second for the United States, getting into scoring position. Arenado is now 3-1, putting this in dangerous territory for Sandoval.

10:30 p.m. --Goldschmidt walks after working the count 3-1, bringing up his teammate Arenado. These two have highlighted the toughest part of the USA lineup.

10:27 p.m. --Big bender there from Sandoval gets Trout swinging for strike three. Sandoval gets some bragging rights once they reconvene with the Angels.

10:26 p.m. --It looked like Betts finally got a hold of one, but he flies out harmlessly to dead center. That brings Trout up with down, and he quickly gets into an 0-2 hole.

10:22 p.m. --Arenado makes a great defensive play (kind of in self defense), as Urías scorches one to him that he bats down and recovers for the out. Big start for Mexico as they jump out in front. Now it will be Sandoval against the USA bats.

10:21 p.m. --Urías is in a full count, after he drove one foul the opposite way and then swung through another. Payoff pitch coming from Martinez.

10:18 p.m. --Paredes takes a walk for Mexico, keeping the inning alive with two down. That brings up Luis Urías, the Brewers infielder.

10:17 p.m. --Rowdy Tellez responds with a groundout into the shift, making it two down for the Rays' Isaac Paredes.

10:15 p.m. --Arozarena took off again but it was a hat on a hat, as Meneses puts a charge in one into left to give Mexico a dos a cero lead! Big swing there to put Mexico on top.Mexico 2, USA 0.

10:13 p.m. --Arozarena was off with the pitch, but Verdugo flies out to Trout in right-center for the first out of the inning. One down, runner on first with the Nationals' Joey Meneses coming up.

10:12 p.m. --There's the call. Arozarena is on as the leadoff man, bringing up Alex Verdugo.

10:11 p.m. --On the first batter of the game, Arozarena grounds up the middle and seemingly beats out a spinning throw from Tim Anderson. Mexico is going to challenge the call of out, and Arozarena should be on first.

10:10 p.m. --Randy Arozarena will lead off for Mexico here after a strong first game against Colombia. He'll see Martinez here.

9:50 p.m. --The United States and Mexico will begin in about 10 minutes, as Nick Martinez squares off against Patrick Sandoval. Here are the lineups for each squad.

This one should be fun 👏
