USS Mississippi (SSN 782) history (2024)

The contract to build the ninth Virginia-class submarine was awarded to the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation in Groton, Conn., on August 14, 2003, The construction began in February 2007.

June 9, 2010 The keel for the Pre-Commissioning Unit Mississippi was laid down during a ceremony at GDEB’s Quonset Point facility in North Kingstown, R.I.

December 3, 2011 PCU Mississippi (SSN 782) was christened during an 11 a.m. EDT ceremony at Electric Boat in Groton, CT. Ms. Allison Stiller, Deputy Assistant SECNAV for ship programs, served as sponsor of the ship. Capt. John P. McGrath is the prospective commanding officer.

April 9, 2012 The Pre-Commissioning Unit Mississippi returned to Groton, Conn., after a two-day alpha sea trials. Underway for Bravo sea trials from April 10-17.

May 2, U.S. Navy took delivery of PCU Mississippi from the General Dynamic's Electric Boat, essentially one year early to the submarine's contract delivery date of April 30, 2013, and almost three months faster than USS Missouri (SSN 780). Arrived at Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, Conn., on May 4.

May 22, SSN 782 pulled into Port Canaveral, Fla., for a brief port call on its route to Pascagoula, Miss.

June 2, USS Mississippi was commissioned during a 10.30 a.m. CDT ceremony in the Port of Pascagoula, Mississippi; Returned to NSB New London on July 9.

January 15, 2013 General Dynamics Electric Boat Corp. was recently awarded a $52 million cost-plus-fixed-fee modification to the previously awarded contract (N00024-03-C-2101) for the planning and execution of USS Mississippi’s Post Shakedown Availability (PSA). Work is expected to be completed by December 2013.

May 10, Cmdr. Tory J. Swanson relieved Capt. John P. McGrath as CO of the Mississippi during a change-of-command ceremony at Naval Submarine Base New London.

November 25, 2014 USS Mississippi arrived in its new homeport of Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, after a 47-day transit from Groton, Connecticut.

January 5, 2015 The Mississippi departed Pearl Harbor for certifications off the coast of southern California; Brief stop at San Diego Harbor for personnel transfer on Feb. 11.?

February 27, Capt. Harry L. Ganteaume, Commander, Submarine Squadron (COMSUBRON) 1 relieved of duty Cmdr. Tory Swanson due to a " loss of confidence in his ability to command."

April 23, SSN 782 returned to Pearl Harbor after underway for routine training.

June 5, Cmdr. Erik J. Rozek relieved Cmdr. Michael D. Luckett as the 4th CO of Mississippi during a change-of-command ceremony on board the sub at Pearl Harbor.

July 10, USS Mississippi departed Mike Pier, Naval Base Point Loma after a week-long port visit to San Diego; Returned home on July 1?; Underway for Submarine Command Course(SCC) operations on July 2?; Brief stop off Point Loma for personnel transfer on July 31; Returned to Pearl Harbor on Aug. 1?; Underway for local operations from Aug. 2?-29.

In December, the first two women to serve aboard a Pacific Fleet's Virginia-class attack submarine has reported to the USS Mississippi.

From January 16-17, 2016, the Mississippi was underway for a VIP cruise south of Oahu.

March 2, USS Mississippi departed Pier S8, Pearl Harbor for its maiden western Pacific deployment.

March 11, The Mississippi moored at Berth 13S in Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan, for a five-day port visit; Moored at Berth 13S again from April 11-18.

June 13, SSN 782 moored at Berth 1 in Busan Naval Base, Republic of Korea, for a five-day port visit; Brief stop off Sasebo, Japan, on June 24.

June 27, USS Mississippi moored at Akasaki Pier in Fleet Activities Sasebo for a two-day port call; Inport Yokosuka again from July 28- Aug. 1; Brief stop at White Beach, Okinawa, on Aug. 8.

August 22, The Mississippi recently moored outboard the USS Emory S. Land (AS 39) at Alpha Wharf in Apra Harbor, Guam, for a routine port call.

September 1, USS Mississippi mooreed at Wharf S1B on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam following a six-month deployment.

January 5, 2017 Capt. Richard E. Seif relieved Capt. Timothy A. Rexrode as Commander, Submarine Squadron (COMSUBRON) 1 during a change-of-command ceremony on board the Mississippi at Pier S9.

January 6, Capt. Andrew C. Hertel relieved Capt. Michael W. Martin as CO of Naval Submarine Training Center,Pacific(NSTCP)during a change-of-command ceremony on board the USS Mississippi.

October 10, SSN 782 moored at Berth 13S in Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan, for a one-day port call; Moored at Berth 13S again from Nov. 6-12; Brief stop off Yokosuka for personnel transfer on Nov. 13; Brief stop off Sasebo on Nov. 17 and Nov. 20.

November 22, USS Mississippi moored at Berth I2, Jeju Civilian-Military Complex on Jeju Island, Republic of Korea, for a scheduled port call; Brief stop off Sasebo on Dec. 12 and Dec. 14.

January 22, 2018 The Mississippi moored at Berth 13S in Fleet Activities Yokosuka for an eight-day liberty port visit; Brief stop off Yokosuka for personnel transfer on Jan. 31; Brief stop off White Beach, Okinawa, on Feb. 3; Moored at Berth 13S again from Feb. 12-16.

March 30, USS Mississippi moored at Wharf S10 on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam following a seven-month deployment.

April 30, The Mississippi moored at Wharf W5, Naval Magazine Lualualei for a four-day ammo offload.

May 8, Cmdr. Heath E. Johnmeyer relieved Cmdr. Erik J. Rozek as CO of the USS Mississippi during a change-of-command ceremony on board the sub at Wharf S10.

May 22, USS Mississippi entered the Dry Dock #2 at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PHNSY&IMF).

January 8, 2019 Capt. Wesley P. Bringham relieved Capt. Richard E. Seif as Commander, Submarine Squadron (COMSUBRON) 1 during a change-of-command ceremony on board the SSN 782.

February 14, USS Mississippi moored at Wharf S1B on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam after underway for INSURV assessment.

February 21, Rear Adm. Blake L. Converse relieved Rear Adm. Daryl L. Caudle as Commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet (COMSUBPAC) during a change-of-command ceremony on board the Mississippi.

April 1, USS Mississippi moored at Wharf W5, Naval Magazine Lualualei for ammo onload; Underway on April 5; Moored at Wharf S1A on April 19; Underway for routine training from April 26- May 2.

February 28, USS Mississippi moored at Pier S9 on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam following a six-month deployment.

April 6, The Mississippi moored at Wharf W5, Naval Magazine Lualualei for ammo offload; Moored at Pier S9 on April 10; Entered the Dry Dock #1 at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard on May 19.

February 26, 2021 Cmdr. Edward Barry relieved Cmdr. Heath E. Johnmeyer as CO of the SSN 782 during a change-of-command ceremonyat the USS Parche Memorial on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.

September 7, 2022 USS Mississippi departed Pearl Harbor for sea trials following a 28-month Extended Drydocking Selected Restricted Availability (E-DSRA); Moored at Pier S8 on Sept. 22; Moored at Wharf W5 for ammo onload on Oct. 5; Underway again on Oct. 11; Moored at Wharf Y2 on Oct. 24.

November 10, USS Mississippi departed Pearl Harbor for a surge western Pacific deployment.

November 28, The Mississippi moored at DiamantinaPier,HMAS Stirlingon Garden Island, Western Australia,for an eight-day port visit.

March 23, 2023 USS Mississippi made a brief stop in Pearl Harbor for personnel transfer; Brief stop in Pearl Harbor again on March 29 and April 11.
