While Murakami's stats are eye-catching, with an incredible 22 home runs in just 224 plate appearances, there are underlying concerns. His injury history and high strikeout rate (28.8% over three seasons) are red flags. In MLB, where faster pitching is the norm, his contact rate of 63.9% is cause for worry. In fact, his performance against NPB's 93+ MPH pitches, while respectable, pales in comparison to the league average.
But here's where it gets controversial... The Pirates' lineup desperately needs power, having hit a mere 117 home runs in 2025, ranking last in the league. However, Murakami's defensive shortcomings at third base and his potential struggles against MLB pitching make him a risky investment.
And this is the part most people miss... The Pirates need a surefire offensive boost, not a player who might struggle to adjust. With limited resources, they can't afford to gamble on a player who may not provide the necessary value.
