Zoe Bäckstedt's UAE Tour: An Impressive Climb and a White Jersey Journey (2026)

Zoe Bäckstedt's UAE Tour Journey: A Tale of Determination and Growth

In a thrilling finale to the UAE Tour, Zoe Bäckstedt's white jersey reign came to an end, but her performance on the Jebel Hafeet climb left an indelible mark. Despite conceding the best Under 23 rider classification, Zoe's ride was a testament to her talent and resilience.

Zoe, riding for Canyon-SRAM-zondacrypto, had donned the white jersey since stage 1, finishing an impressive third in Madinat Zayed. She followed it up with an 11th-place finish on stage 2, but the final test proved challenging as Eleonora Ciabocco (Picnic-PostNL) claimed the classification.

The Mountain Challenge

Bäckstedt's performance on the mountain was nothing short of remarkable. She held her own against the climbers, outlasting many of them and even surpassing some. It was a display of raw talent and determination. However, her primary goal was to maintain her lead in the young rider category, and the outcome left a hint of disappointment.

"I wanted to push myself and see if I could keep the white jersey," Zoe shared after a post-race debrief with teammates Kasia Niewiadoma and Neve Bradbury. "There was this one exceptional Under-23 climber who proved too strong, but attempting a climb like this in 30°C heat is not my usual forte. I excel in stages like the first, not today's terrain, but overall, it was a positive experience."

A Brutal Climb, A Learning Curve

The Jebel Hafeet climb proved to be a brutal test. Starting easy, it quickly escalated into a full-gas battle as riders tackled the steep slopes. Bäckstedt described it as "super hard," with attempts to split the group hindered by the lack of wind.

"It was a brutal day," she added. "The climb was relentless, and the heat made it even more challenging. But these are the experiences that make us stronger."

Team Success and Growth

Despite Zoe's slight disappointment, the week was a success for Canyon-SRAM. The team secured the team classification, and Niewiadoma, Bäckstedt, and Bradbury all finished within the top 30 in the general classification. It was a testament to the team's collective strength and potential.

And here's where it gets interesting... While Zoe's focus was on the young rider classification, her performance on the mountain suggests a well-rounded talent. It raises the question: Could Zoe be a future climbing specialist? Or will she continue to excel in her preferred terrain?

What are your thoughts? Do you think Zoe's future lies in climbing, or will she stick to her strengths? Let us know in the comments!
