Fair produzierte Smartphones sind noch immer eine Seltenheit. Der Grund ist traurig. Den meisten Verbrauchern geläufig ist das Fairphone. Aber welche Alternativen nehmen es mit dem nachhaltig gefertigten Platzhirsch auf?
Ein nachhaltiges Leben zu führenist leichter gesagt als getan. In einigenBereichen unseres Alltagshaben Verbraucher wenig bis keine Möglichkeiten, zu fair produzierten und ökologischen Produkten zu greifen. Das ist vor allem bei Technik wie Smartphones und Laptops der Fall. Im Geschäft sehen Verbraucher:innen in der Regel das fertige Hochglanzprodukt. Was da aber drin steckt und wie es hergestellt wird, ist in der globalisierten Wirtschaft mit seinen weltweiten Lieferketten und Produktionsstätten so komplex wie die Geräte selbst.
Das niederländische Unternehmen Fairphone mit Sitz in Amsterdam stemmt sich seit 2013gegen dieses Problem. Beim ersten Fairphone achteten die Gründer noch darauf, das die verarbeiteten Metalle nicht aus Kriegsgebieten stammten. Es folgte die stetige Entwicklung zu leistungsfähigeren, aber auch nachhaltigeren Smartphones. Der Clou bei den darauffolgenden Generationenwar ein Baukastensystem, das es erlaubt, einzelne Komponenten wie Kamera oder Akku zu tauschen.
So müssen Verbraucher nicht alle vier Jahre ein neues Smartphone kaufen, sondern erneuern nur die Komponenten, die ein Update benötigen. Das neueFairphone 4funkt dabeiim 5G-Netz, läuft mit Android 11 und hatdie Fairtrade-Gold-Zertifizierung. Ein Label, mit dem sich kein anderes Smartphone schmücken darf. Weiterer Pluspunkt: Für jedes verkaufte Fairphone recycelt das Unternehmen die gleiche Menge an Elektromüll.
Die Fairphone-Alternativen
Angetrieben vom Erfolg des Fairphones, versuchen andere Hersteller nachzuziehen. Allerdings teilen sich die Konkurrenten gewisse Eigenschaften des Fairphones untereinander auf. Einen ebenbürtigen Konkurrenten für das Fairphone gibt es noch nicht.
Ein ähnlich modulares Smartphone wie das Fairphone ist das Shiftphone. Neben deren Langlebigkeit dank Baukastensystem brillieren Shift-Produkte dadurch, dass sich das Unternehmen verpflichtet, fünf Prozent seiner Einnahmen für Sozial- und Nachhaltigkeitsprojekte zu spenden. Warum Sie von den Geräten noch nichts gehört haben? Nun, nur 0,1 Prozent des Geldes fließen in Marketing und Werbung. Als sei das noch nicht genug, verzichten die Gründer:innen ebenfalls auf private Gewinne ihrer Unternehmung. Übrigens: 2021 ging der Deutsche Nachhaltigkeitspreis an Shift. Damit kommt dasStartup mit Sitz inFalkenberg (Nordhessen)dem Fairphone aktuell am nächsten. Das Flagschiff des Unternehmens ist das Shift6mq.
Besonders umweltfreundlich soll hingegen das Teracube sein. Es besteht zu 25 Prozent aus recyceltem Material und bietet vier Jahre Herstellergarantie sowie einen kostenlosen Reparaturservice. Zum Vergleich: Auf das Fairphone 4 gibt es fünf Jahre Garantie und die Reparatur können versierte Bastler dank des Baukastensystems selbst übernehmen. Immerhin: Für jedes verkaufte Teracube pflanzt das Unternehmen nach eigenen Angaben einen Baum. Auch Teracube bewegt sich damit in die richtige Richtung, reicht aber noch nicht an ein Fairphone heran.
Immerhin gibt eszumindest in Teilen in Deutschland zusammengesetzte Handys von Hersteller Gigaset. Leider sind die nicht modularund deren Herstellung benötigtnoch immer Zulieferer aus anderen Ländern mit schlechteren Arbeitsbedingungen. Ein erster Schritt in die richtige Richtung ist die Produktion in Deutschland aber allemal. Außerdem achtet Gigaset bei seinen Verpackungen darauf, dass sie aus bis zu 90 Prozent recyceltem Material bestehen. Pluspunkt für die Umwelt: Da die Smartphones in Deutschland gefertigt werden, entfallen lange Lieferstrecken. Aktuellstes Smartphone des Herstellers ist das Gigaset GS4 – dessen Nachfolger GS5 steht allerdings schon in den Startlöchern.

Einen ähnlichen Weg wie Gigaset beschreitet auch Mara mit seinem X1. Allerdings produziert der Hersteller nicht in Deutschland sondern in Afrika. Und das hat einen guten Grund: Ziel der Mara-Foundation ist es, die Arbeitsbedingungen vor Ort zu verbessern. Leider schweigt sich der Hersteller über die Arbeitsbedingungen der verbauten Chips ebenso aus, wie über die Herkunft der Rohstoffe.
Seltene Rohstoffe: Das Problem von Smartphones
Etwa 60 verschiedene Rohstoffe schlummernin einem Smartphone, darunter Eisen, Silizium, Gold, Magnesium, Kupfer, Nickel, Zinn, Palladium und seltene Sande und Erden. Zum Teil werden die unter menschenverachtenden Bedingungen gewonnen und das immer dann, wenn sie ausden ärmsten Regionen der Welt kommen –beispielsweise dem Kongo. In den dortigen Minen buddeln unter anderemKinder nach Kobalt, wie Amnesty International in einem Bericht von 2016 offengelegt hat.
Das Metall ist für Akkus in Handys und Elektroautos unverzichtbar. Wie und wo sich die Rohstoffe zur Weiterverarbeitung sammeln, ist ebenfalls ein weltweites Spektakel. Die Rohstoffe für Chips landen meist in indischen Fabriken und werden dort weiterverarbeitet. Das Endprodukt – also der fertige Chip – reist dann in Richtung China und Taiwan weiter, um dort möglichst kostengünstig mit weiteren Bauteilen aus aller Welt zu einem Smartphone zu mutieren. Das wiederum landet containerweise per Frachter in Europa, Amerika, Australien undOzeanien und allen anderen Winkeln der Welt.
Profit gegen Menschlichkeit
Egal, wo sich auf der ErdeMinenbetreiber, Zulieferer und Fabrikbesitzer befinden, sie alle eint nur der Wille eines möglichst profitablen Geschäfts. Und dieses Geschäft basiert in korrupten Staaten oder Diktaturen meist auf der Ausbeutung von Land und Mensch. Leider kannsich kein Herstelleraussuchen, wie die Rohstoffeverteilt sind, weshalb sich alle mehr oder weniger dieser Ausbeutung abhängig machen (müssen).
Die meisten Hersteller scheuen aber auch Kosten und Mühen, die Rohstoffgewinnung und Produktionsketten arbeitnehmerfreundlicher und umweltverträglicher zu gestalten. Wenn, dann entsteht der Wandel nur auf Druck von außen – also den größten Kunden. Der Aufwand für die Hersteller scheint aber zu groß,sich durch das weltweite Liefer- und Produktionsgeflecht zu wühlen und Druck auf Produktionsstätten und die Rohstoffgewinnung auszuüben. Dazu gesellt sich die Angst durch einen Akt der Menschlichkeit gegenüber der Konkurrenz ins Hintertreffen zu geraten. Schließlich zählt auch bei Apple, Samsung und Co. vor allem eines: der Profit. Und der steigt bekanntlich nicht durch fairere und nachhaltigeresondern durch billig produzierte und teuer verkaufte Produkte.
Schlechtes Image, bessere Arbeitsbedingungen
Es sei denn, das Image leidet: Vor wenigen Jahren geriet Apple in die Kritik, weil das kalifornische Unternehmen den taiwanischen Hersteller Foxconn mit der Fertigung seiner iPhones beauftragte. Foxconn hielt aber wenig von menschenwürdigen Arbeitsverhältnissen, weshalb das Unternehmen durch eine nicht enden wollende Serie von Suiziden seiner Mitarbeiter in die Schlagzeilen geriet.
Der Skandal wirkte sich auch auf das Image des US-amerikanischen Tech-Riesen aus, der in der Folge Druck auf Foxconn ausübte, um die Arbeitsbedingungen wenigstens etwas zu verbessern. Wer hätte es gedacht: Erst auf Druck seines größten Kunden verbesserte Foxconn die Arbeitsverhältnisse. Das grundsätzliche Dilemma aber bleibt: Wegen der unterschiedlichen Rohstoffe und weltweiten Produktionsketten ist es noch immer (fast) unmöglich, ein faires Smartphone zu kaufen.
Fairphone-Alternative: Gebraucht ist das neue neu!
So weit, so überschaubar. Apple, Samsung, Google und Xiaomi finden in dieser Liste zurecht keinen Platz. Dafür scheren sich wirklich alle zu wenig um die Produktionsbedingungen und den Ursprung der Rohstoffe ihrer Smartphones. Wenn überhaupt, werden die großen Hersteller aktiv, wenn sie ihr Geschäft durch ein schlechtes Image gefährdet sehen. Wer seinen lieb gewonnenen Marken trotzdem treu bleiben will, weil er beispielsweise Cloud- oder andere Softwaredienste der Hersteller nutzt, sollte nach sogenannten Refurbished-Produkten Ausschau halten.
Dabei handelt es sich um Rückläufer oder Ausstellungsstücke, die meist kleinere optische Mängel haben, aber einwandfrei funktionieren. Bevor die Geräte in den Verkauf gehen, werden sievon Experten auf ihre Funktionalität geprüft. Eine Herstellergarantie gibt es nicht, dafür gilt aber natürlich die gesetzliche Gewährleistungspflicht von einem Jahr. Pluspunkt für die Gebrauchten: Der Preis liegt unter dem Neuwert und es fallen keine Kosten für neue Rohstoffe und Transportwege an.
Ecosia: Die grüne Suchmaschine
Übrigens entscheidet nicht allein das Smartphonedarüber, wie ökologisch es ist,sondern auch seine Nutzung. Streamingdienste wie Netflix und Spotifyoder soziale Netzwerke wie Instagram und Twitter und nicht zuletzt die Google-Suche sind energiehungrige und klimabelastende Dienste. Müssen sie aber nicht sein, wie die Suchmaschine Ecosia beweist:80 Prozent des Einnahmeüberschusses spendet Ecosia an gemeinnützige Naturschutzorganisationen.
Schlechte Suchergebnisse brauchen Verbraucher aber nicht fürchten, denn die erhält Ecosia von Bing, der Suchmaschine von Microsoft.Allerdings hat die Öko-Suchmaschine ein Problem und das ist ein Marktanteil von nur 0,1 Prozent. Woran das liegt? Nun, theoretisch können Sie in Ihrem Browser eine Standard-Suchmaschine – beispielsweise Ecosia (ökologisch) oder DuckDuckGo (Privatsphäre) –frei einstellen und direkt von der Link-Zeile aus eine Suche eingeben.Allerdings machen das nur die wenigsten Menschen. Zu allem Überflussversteigern Apple, Firefox, Opera & Co. an den Höchstbietenden, welche Suchmaschine in ihren Browsern als "Standard" voreingestellt ist.
Weil Google der dickste Fisch im Teichist und über das meiste Geld verfügt, kauft sich das Unternehmen regelmäßig den ersten Platz in der Liste,hält so die Konkurrenz klein und sichert sich einen Marktanteil von mehr als90 Prozent. Nicht wenige Kritiker sprechen deshalb von einer Monopolstellung Googles – jedenfalls in der westlichen Welt. Denn nur in zwei Ländern der Erde hat das Unternehmen ernstzunehmende Konkurrenz. Es sind Russland und China, weil dort die Suchmaschinen Yandex (Russland) und Baidu (China) beliebter sind – beziehungsweise Google verboten ist.
